This is Yarra Valley chardonnay that's as generous as it is sophisticated... Grapefruit, nuts, lemon pith, oak and lanolin all greet you before the wine has even touched your lips. The palate goes to another level of complexity, trying to pick individual notes is like picking individual voices in a choir. And why should we? If the song sounds good, let 'em sing - and the wine is certainly singing now.

Why do we love this wine?

The Yarra Valley has long provided some of the finest chardonnays made in this country, and this recent release - young though it may be - reinforces that reputation emphatically. This is seriously impressive stuff with an exciting future ahead. Instantly identifiable as Yarra chardonnay, the wine is concentrated and elegant and energetic and mouth-filling, all at the same time. It speaks of place, and you could do much worse than speak about the gorgeous vineyards of the Yarra Valley and it's many surrounding hills. As we said - this place has been pumping out some of the best chardonnays in the country for a very long time - just check Halliday's Chardonnay Challenge!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create ideal conditions for producing elegant, complex Chardonnays that balance power with finesse. The region's elevation and temperature variations allow for slow ripening, which develops the concentrated flavours and natural acidity that make Yarra Chardonnays instantly recognisable. This terroir consistently produces wines that showcase both varietal character and a distinct sense of place, earning recognition in competitions like Halliday's Chardonnay Challenge.

Young Chardonnays from premium regions like Yarra Valley often display remarkable potential even in their first year, showing the quality of fruit and winemaking technique. The 2024's impressive 95-point Wine Orbit rating demonstrates exceptional balance and concentration that will continue developing over the next 3-5 years. The wine's current energy and mouth-filling character suggest it has the structure and complexity to evolve beautifully, gaining additional layers of flavour and textural sophistication with proper cellaring.

The combination of grapefruit and lemon provides a bright, zesty backbone that's perfectly complemented by jasmine's delicate floral aromatics. This interplay creates a multi-layered tasting experience where the citrus elements provide freshness and acidity, while the jasmine adds elegance and perfume. In medium-bodied Chardonnays, these flavour components typically integrate beautifully, with the citrus becoming more complex and the florals more pronounced as the wine develops.

The wine's medium body and rich, full character make it versatile with both seafood and poultry dishes that have some weight and complexity. Think roasted chicken with herbs, pan-seared scallops, or creamy pasta with mushrooms - dishes that can match the wine's concentration without overwhelming its elegant citrus and floral notes. The Yarra Valley's natural acidity also makes it excellent with dishes featuring butter or cream sauces, where it can cut through richness while complementing the flavours.

While this Chardonnay is already showing impressive quality and drinkability, its concentrated structure and high ratings suggest it will reward patience. Drinking it now reveals its youthful energy and bright fruit character, but cellaring for 2-4 years will allow the wine to develop greater complexity and integration. The choice depends on your preference - immediate gratification of its vibrant citrus and floral profile, or the anticipation of watching it evolve into something even more sophisticated.
