A chablis-like sensibility to it in its youth, the layers have begun to unfurl and reveal even more levels of complexity and depth. We've seen a few vintages of this wine, we know the drill: drink now for chablis-style intensity, drink in a couple of months for a rounder, richer drop. Easy as!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Ripe mango and yellow nectarines dance with a star anise spice and notes of vanilla infused panna cotta. There's a touch of cultured butter and freshly baked croissant to the aroma, which will keep you coming back for more. The texture is bold and unashamed, while still holding tightly onto that fresh Yarra Valley acidity. This is a remarkable wine, and we've only managed to get a small amount to share with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Alena Chardonnay showcases the cooler climate elegance of the Yarra Valley while delivering unexpected richness and complexity. The combination of tropical fruit intensity with French patisserie notes like cultured butter and croissant suggests sophisticated winemaking techniques, likely including lees stirring and partial malolactic fermentation. Despite its full-bodied nature, it maintains the bright acidity that Yarra Valley is renowned for, creating a wine that bridges Old World finesse with New World fruit expression.

The 95-point Wine Orbit rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance, a hallmark of great Chardonnay. Critics likely praised its textural complexity - the 'bold and unashamed' mouthfeel combined with vibrant acidity creates the kind of tension that separates good wines from great ones. The integration of oak-derived vanilla and spice notes with pure fruit expression, plus the intriguing star anise complexity, demonstrates masterful winemaking that critics recognise as truly outstanding.

The wine's rich texture and cultured butter notes make it perfect for lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with brown butter sauce. The tropical fruit characters and vanilla undertones pair beautifully with roasted chicken with mango salsa or pork tenderloin with stone fruit glaze. For cheese lovers, try it with aged Gruyere or creamy Camembert - the wine's acidity will cut through rich textures while the vanilla notes complement nutty, aged flavours.

Serve this full-bodied Chardonnay slightly warmer than typical whites - around 12-14°C - to allow its complex aromatics and creamy texture to fully express themselves. The wine's structure suggests it will develop beautifully over 3-5 years, with the tropical fruit notes evolving into more honeyed, nutty characteristics. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, and consider decanting 30 minutes before serving to enhance the star anise and vanilla complexities.

As a 2024 release, this represents the very latest expression of Helen & Joey's winemaking philosophy and the Yarra Valley's terroir. The fact that it's already showing such remarkable integration and complexity suggests exceptional fruit quality and skilled cellar work. Young Chardonnays of this calibre often benefit from both immediate enjoyment and medium-term cellaring, allowing you to experience how the mango and nectarine notes evolve while the oak integration becomes even more seamless.
