Why do we love this wine?

Lime splice, lemon curd and nectarine on the nose tells you we're somewhere in or around the Yarra. A juicy palate of rockmelon, pink grapefruit and just enough of that buttery, toasty, oaky richness. A little saline twang keeps things fresh, while the creamy mouthfeel adds just the right touch of indulgence. Barrel-fermented, mostly through malo, and aged in French oak, this is layered, textural, and ridiculously well made for the price. If you're unsure where your chardy loyalties lie - big and buttery or lean and racy - this sits perfectly in the middle. Elegant, balanced, and damn delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Chardonnay strikes a perfect balance between the two dominant Australian Chardonnay styles. While it undergoes barrel fermentation and malolactic conversion in French oak for that creamy, buttery richness, it maintains freshness through a saline minerality that prevents it from becoming overly heavy. This middle-ground approach makes it incredibly food-friendly and appeals to both camps of Chardonnay lovers.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate is crucial for producing Chardonnays with natural acidity and elegant fruit expression. The region's diverse soils and elevation changes allow for extended ripening periods, which explains the complex layering of citrus, stone fruit, and tropical notes in this wine. This terroir-driven character, combined with the saline minerality, creates the distinctive Yarra Valley signature that experienced tasters can identify on the nose alone.

Malolactic fermentation converts sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, creating that creamy, buttery mouthfeel Chardonnay is famous for. By doing this 'mostly' rather than completely, the winemaker preserves some of the wine's natural acidity and freshness. This partial malo technique is a hallmark of premium Chardonnay production, allowing for complexity while maintaining the bright, juicy character that keeps the wine balanced.

French oak provides subtle vanilla and spice notes without overwhelming the fruit, unlike American oak which can be more aggressive. The barrel fermentation process allows the wine to integrate with the oak during primary fermentation, creating seamless texture rather than obvious woody flavours. This technique, combined with the toasty richness mentioned, suggests careful oak management that enhances rather than masks the Yarra Valley fruit character.

The medium-bodied, textural nature makes this Chardonnay incredibly versatile with food. The creamy mouthfeel and oak treatment pair beautifully with roasted chicken, lobster with butter sauce, or creamy pasta dishes, while the maintained acidity and saline notes cut through rich foods and complement fresh seafood. The balanced style means it won't compete with delicate dishes but has enough weight to stand up to more substantial fare.
