This comes from one of Tasmania's best producers - genuine elite territory. Small operation means limited production, which translates to genuinely hard-to-get bottles. When you find them, you grab them. We've got stone fruit and citrus zest rolling through a creamy, nutty base - all carried by that trademark Tassie acidity that keeps it crisp and focused. One that's just as worthy of analysis as it is of pure, unthinking enjoyment!

Why do we love this wine?

'The Apple Isle' is building a serious reputation beyond just beautiful bubbles and powerful pinots. Chardonnays like this prove Tassie's cool-climate advantages - retaining natural acid and brightness even after plenty of oak treatment and creamy texture-building techniques that would flatten warmer-climate fruit. Pale gold with flickers of green in the glass, the colour somewhat belies the concentration of this wine. White peach, lemon curd, struck flint and toasted cashew aromatics. A refined, elegant palate with vibrant acidity layering stone fruit, citrus zest and subtle oak spice. Perfect with scallops, roast chook or a rich risotto, it’s drinking beautifully now but will keep building for the next eight years. Limited release, small volume - you know what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool climate allows Chardonnay to retain natural acidity and brightness even after extensive oak treatment and lees stirring techniques that would typically overwhelm warmer-climate fruit. This creates wines with both richness and elegance - a balance that's harder to achieve in Australia's warmer regions. The island's maritime influence and latitude provide ideal conditions for producing Chardonnay with both power and finesse.

Struck flint is a mineral descriptor often found in premium cool-climate Chardonnays, referring to the sharp, smoky scent you get when striking flint stones together. This aroma typically develops from extended lees contact and indicates a wine with serious mineral complexity. It's considered a hallmark of quality Chardonnay, suggesting the wine has both terroir expression and skilled winemaking behind it.

While this Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, it's built to evolve over the next eight years thanks to its natural acidity backbone and quality oak integration. Cool-climate Chardonnays like this typically develop more complex honeyed and nutty characters with age, while maintaining their citrus freshness. The wine's current vibrancy will gradually transform into richer, more layered flavours while retaining its elegant structure.

The wine's medium body and oak treatment make it perfect for richer dishes that can match its texture - scallops complement the citrus notes while echoing the wine's elegance, roast chicken works with the stone fruit flavours, and creamy risottos pair beautifully with the wine's own creamy mouthfeel. The key is matching the wine's weight and complexity rather than fighting against its oak influence.

Black Market Deals typically feature limited-release wines from boutique producers at exceptional value, often with the winery's identity kept confidential to protect their regular pricing structure. This creates an opportunity to access premium, small-volume wines that might otherwise be unavailable or significantly more expensive. The 'Staff Pick' rating and boutique winery designation suggest this represents serious quality at an insider price point.
