This wine's become so iconic that it's used as the barometer for the entire region. This one tells us that 2021 was a special year in Margaret River. This is a special wine. Not a single hair out of place - as close to chardonnay perfection as it gets.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A cooler vintage, by Margaret River's standards, is typified in this wine by a classic lemon, lime and grapefruit citrus with subtle notes of white stone fruit and enduring natural acid. The winemaking has imparted secondary notes of roasted nuts, fresh bread and, yes, cream, this is in part because of the oak profile but also gentle lees stirring, overall this is both harmonious and smooth yet extremely regional. The only question is when to drink it... Well, this might sound stupid but it's true, if you drink this now you'll enjoy the very best of what young, vibrant, Margaret River chardonnay can be. Leave it for a couple of years and you'll get a bigger wine with more overt secondary characteristics. We'll be chucking six in the fridge and six in the cellar, por che no los dos?!

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's maritime climate creates Chardonnays with exceptional natural acidity and citrus precision, unlike the richer, more tropical styles from warmer regions like Barossa Valley. This 2023 showcases the region's signature lemon-lime backbone with subtle stone fruit, enhanced by cool vintage conditions that preserved the wine's elegant mineral structure. The combination of French oak and lees stirring adds complexity without overwhelming the pristine fruit character that Margaret River is renowned for.

This wine offers two distinct drinking experiences depending on your preference. Drinking it now reveals vibrant citrus freshness and primary fruit flavours at their peak intensity. However, cellaring for 2-3 years will develop more pronounced secondary characteristics like honey, toast, and developed stone fruit complexity. The wine's excellent natural acidity and quality oak integration suggest it will age gracefully, rewarding patient collectors with increased depth and textural richness.

The wine's rich texture and nutty, creamy notes make it perfect for lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with herbs, or creamy seafood risotto. The citrus acidity cuts through rich sauces beautifully, while the oak-derived flavours complement dishes with similar roasted or caramelised elements. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or creamy brie, as the wine's full body can stand up to stronger flavours without being overwhelmed.

The cooler 2023 vintage in Margaret River resulted in slower ripening and enhanced acid retention, creating a more elegant and structured Chardonnay than typical warmer years. This vintage character emphasises the wine's citrus precision and mineral backbone while maintaining the region's characteristic stone fruit complexity. The extended growing season allowed for optimal flavour development without excessive alcohol, resulting in a wine that perfectly balances power with finesse.

The winemaker employed traditional Burgundian techniques including lees stirring, which creates the wine's creamy mouthfeel and adds subtle bread-like flavours through contact with dead yeast cells. French oak fermentation and maturation contributes the roasted nut characteristics and structural tannins, while careful temperature control preserved the primary citrus and stone fruit aromatics. This combination of modern precision and classical methods results in a wine that showcases both varietal purity and sophisticated winemaking craft.
