Why do we love this wine?

The round melon, pineapple and guava notes abundantly coat the palate, while succulent french oak flavours linger long. Loaded with texture and harmonious layers of citrus and floral notes to really secure its place as one complex chardy. You’ll have no problems knocking back a glass or two of this beauty whatever the occasion, we’ve certainly been known to crack one come 5pm at Mofo HQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2023 Chardonnay showcases the cool-climate elegance that Adelaide Hills is renowned for, with its complex layering of tropical fruits and citrus notes. The French oak treatment adds sophistication without overwhelming the fruit, creating a textural wine that balances richness with freshness. Its dual 94-point ratings from Wine Showcase Magazine and Wine Orbit demonstrate exceptional quality that rivals premium Chardonnays from established regions.

The French oak provides a subtle vanilla backbone that complements rather than dominates the fruit flavours, creating what's described as 'succulent french oak flavours' that linger on the palate. Unlike American oak which can be more assertive, French oak adds textural complexity and allows the natural melon, pineapple and guava characteristics to shine through. This careful oak integration is a hallmark of quality Chardonnay winemaking and contributes to the wine's full-bodied, harmonious character.

The wine's rich texture and tropical fruit profile make it an excellent match for creamy seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The French oak and vanilla notes complement roasted chicken or pork with herb crusts, while the citrus and floral elements can handle spicier Asian cuisine like Thai green curry. Its full body and complexity also make it suitable for aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring mushrooms and truffle.

This Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, as evidenced by its immediate appeal and multiple gold medals in current tastings. The 2023 vintage shows excellent fruit integration with oak, suggesting optimal drinking over the next 2-3 years while the tropical flavours remain vibrant. While some premium Chardonnays can age longer, this style is crafted for near-term enjoyment when the melon and citrus characteristics are at their peak freshness.

A textural Chardonnay emphasises mouthfeel and weight rather than just fruit flavours, creating a wine with substantial presence on the palate. This style often involves techniques like lees stirring, partial malolactic fermentation, or extended oak contact to build complexity and richness. The description of 'loaded with texture' and 'harmonious layers' indicates this wine has depth and substance that coats the mouth, making each sip more engaging and satisfying than lighter, more linear styles.
