Why do we love this wine?

Another knockout wine from one of our Coal River favourites. A bit on the fuller side for such a cool climate region, but we absolutely love that. There's a sophisticated mineral line running throughout, which delves into the salinity realm without going full Chablis. Peaches and apricots round out the fruit weight component, and the acid persists throughout, giving the wine magnificent line drive. Tasmania has such a capacity to produce excellence vintage after vintage, and this wine certainly hasn't bucked that trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool climate typically produces leaner, more mineral-driven Chardonnays compared to warmer mainland regions. This Coal River Valley example strikes an interesting balance - it's fuller-bodied than expected for the region while maintaining that distinctive Tasmanian mineral backbone and persistent acidity. The cooler conditions allow for longer ripening periods, developing complex stone fruit flavours while preserving the wine's natural freshness and elegance.

The mineral character comes from Tasmania's unique geological terroir, particularly the Coal River Valley's ancient soils and maritime influence. You'll taste this as a subtle saline quality - almost like a hint of sea spray - that runs through the wine without overwhelming the fruit. It's more restrained than the chalky minerality found in Chablis, adding complexity and a sense of place that makes the peach and apricot flavours more vibrant and focused.

The wine's mineral backbone and persistent acidity make it excellent with seafood, particularly Tasmanian salmon, scallops, or lobster with butter-based sauces. The fuller body can handle richer preparations like roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta dishes, or aged hard cheeses. The stone fruit character also complements pork tenderloin or dishes featuring apricot or peach elements, while the minerality cuts through creamy textures beautifully.

The 2023 vintage showcases Tasmania's remarkable ability to produce exceptional wines year after year, regardless of seasonal variations. The island's maritime climate provides natural temperature regulation, preventing extreme heat spikes that can compromise quality. This vintage demonstrates the region's signature style - combining fruit intensity with mineral precision and natural acidity - proving why Tasmanian Chardonnay has gained international recognition for its reliability and distinctive character.

Line drive refers to the wine's structural integrity - how the acidity carries the flavours from the initial taste through to the finish in a straight, focused trajectory. In this Chardonnay, the persistent acid acts like a backbone, ensuring the peach and apricot flavours don't become flabby or lose definition. This creates a wine that feels fresh and vibrant rather than heavy, making each sip as engaging as the first and indicating excellent ageing potential.
