In the words of our Wine-buyer, this is "completely delicious". Soft, bold, creamy, rich and round chardonnay. One of the larger styles of chardy we've had for some time. Fans of old-school Australian styles will have a day out with this one.

Why do we love this wine?

100% malolactic fermentation and 11 months in (30%) new French oak tells you a fair bit of what you need to know about the style of this wine. We're talking big, buttery, rich and creamy. Yes, it's definitely a throw back to an old-school Aussie style but there's hints of modernity, there's vibrant acid, a fruit profile focussing on white peach, citrus and a nutty aspect. Lively and wonderfully drinking at a young age, this wine will continue to soften and gain complexity of the next few years, if that's what you're into.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents a deliberate return to the rich, buttery Chardonnay style that made Australian wines famous in the 1980s and 90s. The 100% malolactic fermentation converts sharp malic acid into creamy lactic acid, creating that signature buttery mouthfeel, while 30% new French oak adds vanilla and spice complexity. Unlike crisp, unoaked modern Chardonnays, this full-bodied approach celebrates texture and richness while maintaining enough acidity to keep it balanced and food-friendly.

While this Chardonnay is deliciously approachable now with its vibrant fruit and well-integrated oak, it's built for medium-term cellaring. The substantial structure from malolactic fermentation and French oak will allow it to develop greater complexity over 3-5 years, with the white peach flavours evolving into more honeyed, nutty characteristics. Adelaide Hills' cool climate provides the natural acidity needed for graceful ageing, though many will find its current youthful exuberance irresistible.

The wine's rich, creamy texture and oak influence make it perfect for dishes that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed. Think roasted chicken with herbs, lobster thermidor, creamy mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses like gruyere. The nutty, vanilla notes from French oak complement dishes with similar flavour profiles, while the underlying acidity cuts through rich sauces and butter-based preparations beautifully.

The unanimous 95-point scores from Tim White, Toni Paterson, and Wine Orbit reflect exceptional winemaking execution in a challenging style. Creating a rich, oaked Chardonnay that maintains balance and elegance requires precise timing and technique - too much oak or malolactic fermentation can easily overwhelm the fruit. The single vineyard designation suggests premium fruit quality, while the Adelaide Hills region's reputation for producing Australia's finest cool-climate Chardonnays adds credibility to these outstanding scores.

Black Market Deals typically indicate premium wines offered at significantly reduced prices, often because the producer prefers to remain anonymous or clear excess inventory discreetly. Given the 95-point ratings and single vineyard pedigree, this represents exceptional value for what would normally be a much more expensive bottle. The mystery aspect doesn't diminish quality - it often means you're getting access to wines from respected producers at prices they wouldn't normally allow in the open market.
