Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Another knockout wine from one of our Coal River favourites. A bit on the fuller side for such a cool climate region, but we absolutely love that. There's a sophisticated mineral line running throughout, which delves into the salinity realm without going full Chablis. Peaches and apricots round out the fruit weight component, and the acid persists throughout, giving the wine magnificent line drive. Tasmania has such a capacity to produce excellence vintage after vintage, and this wine certainly hasn't bucked that trend.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool climate allows for extended ripening periods, creating Chardonnays with exceptional natural acidity and mineral complexity. This Coal River Valley example showcases the island's unique terroir through its sophisticated mineral backbone and saline qualities, while still maintaining fuller body than typical cool-climate wines. The combination of pristine fruit expression and persistent acidity creates a wine that bridges European elegance with Australian fruit intensity.

The mineral character comes from Tasmania's ancient geological foundations and the Coal River Valley's unique soil composition. This translates to a clean, almost chalky sensation on the palate that adds complexity beyond just fruit flavours. The salinity mentioned suggests influence from the maritime climate, where sea breezes contribute subtle briny notes that enhance the wine's overall structure and food-pairing versatility.

The wine's medium body, persistent acidity, and mineral backbone make it ideal for seafood dishes, particularly grilled fish or shellfish that echo its saline qualities. The peach and apricot fruit weight can handle richer preparations like roasted chicken or pork, while the nutty characteristics suggest compatibility with dishes featuring almonds or hazelnuts. The fresh, juicy style also pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine where citrus and mineral notes complement spicy or umami-rich flavours.

The 2022 vintage demonstrates Tasmania's remarkable consistency in producing high-quality wines year after year, earning recognition from respected critics like James Halliday. Tasmania's cool, stable climate minimises vintage variation, allowing winemakers to focus on expressing terroir rather than managing extreme weather conditions. This particular wine exemplifies why Tasmanian Chardonnay is increasingly recognised internationally as a benchmark for cool-climate winemaking excellence.

Line drive refers to the wine's structural backbone - the way acidity carries flavours from the initial taste through to the finish in a clean, focused manner. Like a perfectly hit tennis shot, the wine maintains its trajectory and intensity throughout the tasting experience without dropping off or becoming flabby. This characteristic is particularly prized in Chardonnay as it indicates excellent winemaking balance and suggests the wine will age gracefully while maintaining its vibrant character.
