A very generous Margs chardy. The weight of the wine is full and rich from start to finish, accompanied by bristly little bursts of acid that gather the dense fruit and deliver it neatly, cleanly through the finish.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Single vineyard chardonnay with a single vision; lasting fruit purity. This is citrusy, tropical, ripe, delicious. The acid is perfectly in step with a thin line of saline savouriness, the two duelling through the finish. The oak overture offers vanilla and spice but, most crucially (and satisfyingly) rich, nutty palate weight. This is the result of a leading Margaret River winemaker getting their hands on some seriously excellent fruit. Drink now or cellar for the next ten years easily.

Frequently Asked Questions

This single vineyard Chardonnay showcases the unique terroir of Margaret River, where the maritime climate creates wines with exceptional balance between tropical fruit intensity and mineral acidity. The winemaker has crafted a style that emphasises fruit purity while using oak judiciously to add complexity rather than dominate the palate. The saline savouriness mentioned reflects Margaret River's coastal influence, which adds a distinctive edge that sets it apart from warmer inland regions.

This wine has excellent cellaring potential of up to ten years from vintage, which is impressive for a Chardonnay. The full-bodied structure, balanced acidity, and quality oak integration provide the backbone needed for extended ageing. As it matures, expect the tropical fruit flavours to evolve into more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics, while the oak will integrate further and the wine will develop greater textural richness.

The rich, nutty palate weight and saline finish make this wine perfect for seafood dishes like lobster thermidor, pan-seared scallops, or grilled barramundi. The tropical fruit notes complement Asian-inspired dishes with coconut or mango elements, while the oak structure can handle richer preparations like roasted chicken with herbs or creamy mushroom risotto. The wine's acidity cuts through butter and cream-based sauces beautifully.

Black Market Deals typically represent exceptional value wines where the producer's identity is kept confidential, allowing you to access premium quality at a lower price point. In this case, you're getting a wine from a 'leading Margaret River winemaker' working with 'seriously excellent fruit' - suggesting this could be from a well-regarded estate offering their wine under an anonymous label. This approach benefits both the winery and consumer by providing quality without brand premium pricing.

While white wines don't typically require decanting like reds, this full-bodied Chardonnay could benefit from some aeration, especially if drinking young. Consider opening the bottle 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the oak and fruit elements to integrate and the wine to show its full complexity. Serve at 10-12°C to best appreciate the balance between the tropical fruit characters and the saline minerality that defines this Margaret River expression.
