A wonderfully balanced wine. Age has been gentle here - softening the wine and rounding out the edges without sacrificing any hint of natural acid. Struck match and oatmeal on the nose with a complex fruit profile ranging from ripe quince to crunchy pears. A beautiful expression of time and place.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a seriously small-batch wine. 100% estate fruit, hand-picked and hand-sorted, this lot are so invested in the process we'd be surprised if they haven't named each individual grape. Aged on lees for 9 months (give or take) with a good lick of French oak and carefully curated malolactic fermentation, this beautiful drop has a wonderfully rich flavour and weighty mouthfeel but the brightness of the acid brings some structure and refreshment to the lengthy finish. A wine that has been made with such care demands the drinker's respect, then earns it. Well made, well priced, bloody well delectable.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a seriously small-batch, estate-grown Chardonnay where every grape is hand-picked and hand-sorted by a boutique producer. The meticulous attention extends to 9 months of lees ageing with French oak and carefully controlled malolactic fermentation, creating complexity that mass-market wines simply can't achieve. This level of craftsmanship results in a wine with distinctive character and terroir expression that reflects the Yarra Valley's unique climate and soil.

The full-bodied character comes from a combination of extended lees contact for 9 months and partial malolactic fermentation, which converts sharp malic acid into creamier lactic acid. The French oak adds vanilla notes and textural weight, while the lees (dead yeast cells) contribute to the wine's creamy, almost buttery mouthfeel. Despite this richness, the natural acidity provides essential structure and prevents the wine from feeling heavy or cloying.

The struck match or mineral notes are classic hallmarks of premium Chardonnay, often indicating partial malolactic fermentation and quality French oak treatment. These smoky, flinty characteristics suggest the wine has developed complexity through careful winemaking rather than simple fruit expression. Combined with green apple and vanilla notes, this creates a sophisticated flavour profile that's distinctly different from tropical, over-oaked styles popular in warmer climates.

The 2019 vintage in Yarra Valley was characterised by excellent growing conditions that allowed for optimal flavour development and natural acidity retention. At four years of age, this Chardonnay has reached an ideal drinking window where the initial oak integration has softened and the wine shows both primary fruit character and developing tertiary complexity. Yarra Valley's cool climate ensures the wine maintains freshness even as it develops richness through bottle age.

The full-bodied nature and French oak influence make this wine perfect for richer dishes like roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta with mushrooms, or grilled seafood with butter-based sauces. The struck match minerality and bright acidity also complement oysters, soft cheeses, and dishes with subtle smoky elements. The wine's weight and complexity can stand up to flavourful preparations without being overwhelmed, making it versatile for both casual and fine dining occasions.
