Make no mistake, Tassie is as cool as it gets in the wine scene right now. The products coming out of the Apple Isle rarely (if ever) miss.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a brand new producer to us, and we're os-so excited to be bringing it to you. Captivating, compelling, complex. Classically Tasmanian in it's cool fruit delivery - green apple and winter pear. The acidity is crunchy and bright, sitting deftly on top of a mineral base. The richness (thanks in party to pretty mammoth 25% new oak maturation) and weight of the wine chimes in quite late, almost as refuge from the pep and promise of the acid drive. Candied lemon zest and golden raisin mark the long finish. A complete wine.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool climate produces Chardonnays with distinctive crisp acidity and restrained fruit character, quite different from the richer, more tropical styles often found on the mainland. This wine exemplifies the Tasmanian approach with its green apple and winter pear notes, delivering freshness and minerality that reflects the island's unique terroir. The cool conditions allow for extended ripening, creating complexity while maintaining that signature bright, crunchy acidity.

The substantial new oak component adds richness and weight without overwhelming the wine's natural fruit character. New oak barrels contribute vanilla, spice, and subtle toasty notes while allowing controlled micro-oxygenation that softens tannins and integrates flavours. In this Chardonnay, the oak provides a foundation that supports rather than dominates, creating textural complexity that emerges on the palate after the initial bright fruit and acid impact.

A 95-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality in the Australian wine context, indicating a wine of outstanding character and complexity. Halliday's rating system is highly respected locally, and scores above 94 points are reserved for wines showing remarkable balance, depth, and aging potential. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates exemplary winemaking and expresses its Tasmanian terroir with distinction.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to highlight its mineral backbone while allowing the oak-derived richness to shine through. The full body and complex flavour profile make it ideal for pairing with lobster, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. The wine's acidity and weight also complement rich seafood preparations and soft cheeses, while its oak integration makes it suitable for dishes with subtle herb or butter-based sauces.

Premium Tasmanian Chardonnays like this one typically develop beautifully over 5-8 years from vintage, with the 2018 now entering its optimal drinking window. The combination of natural acidity, quality oak integration, and full-bodied structure suggests it will continue evolving, developing more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics while maintaining its mineral core. The wine's current balance indicates it can be enjoyed now or cellared for further development through the mid-2020s.
