Why do we love this wine?

Nervy and precise. Mineral and complex. The little bit of age on this wine has allowed some richness and fullness to further develop, but it's the freshness and zeal that steal the show. Gun smoke, slate, river-rock notes with just the suggestion of salinity lurking in the shadows. The fruit profile is distinctly Mediterranean; whole lemon, grapefruit, and tangerine drive the wine. The acid is (as it should be with chardonnay) the beginning, middle, and end of this story - exciting and zippy, ushering the fruit along without ever overpowering it. It's more ever-present undertone than overture, and that's just one of the tiny details that make this wine a triumph. Buy it. Drink some. Cellar some. Enjoy it all.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine earned James Halliday's Special Value Award alongside an impressive 96 points, indicating exceptional quality at its price point. The additional bottle age since 2018 has allowed the wine to develop greater complexity and richness while maintaining its vibrant acidity. Yarra Valley Chardonnays from this vintage are now hitting their stride, offering the perfect balance of youthful energy and mature sophistication that makes them incredibly food-friendly and cellar-worthy.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types, including the mineral-rich slate and river-rock formations mentioned in this wine's profile, create ideal conditions for elegant Chardonnay. The region's temperature variations allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity, resulting in wines with both power and finesse. This particular wine showcases the valley's ability to produce Chardonnays with distinctive mineral complexity and Mediterranean-influenced citrus characters.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to highlight its mineral complexity and vibrant acidity. The full-bodied nature and cashew-vanilla notes make it perfect for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops. The wine's Mediterranean fruit profile and underlying salinity also complement roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta dishes, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's acidity can cut through richness.

These descriptors refer to the wine's distinctive mineral profile, which comes from the vineyard's geological composition and winemaking techniques. Gun smoke suggests a subtle smoky, flinty character often associated with premium Chardonnays that have seen quality oak treatment or lees contact. The slate notes indicate a clean, mineral-driven palate that adds complexity and length, creating a wine that's both powerful and refined rather than simply fruity.

This wine is beautifully balanced for both immediate enjoyment and further cellaring. At six years old, it's showing excellent development with enhanced richness while maintaining its core freshness and zeal. Quality Yarra Valley Chardonnays like this can continue to evolve gracefully for another 5-8 years, developing more complex honeyed and nutty characters. The recommendation to 'drink some, cellar some' reflects its versatility - perfect now but with potential for even greater complexity.
