The Yarra Valley does a lot of things well. Chardonnay might just be the best of them. And 2017 was quite possibly the best Yarra Chardy vintage in a lifetime. This one delivers absolutely classic Yarra vibes. Stone fruit, citrus, a mineral edge and a creamy, textured mid-palate built from careful French oak maturation. It's the kind of wine that works just as hard at a dinner table as it does on its own on a Friday afternoon. Vibrant, elegant and completely delicious.

Why do we love this wine?

This one pulls fruit from two distinct parts of the valley - the warmer valley floor for richness and spice, and a high-altitude site in the Upper Yarra for citrus snap and nervous acidity. The result is a Chardonnay with real depth and complexity, where neither end of the spectrum dominates and everything sits in genuinely satisfying balance. Yarra Chardonnay at a price that makes grabbing a few an easy decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the art of blending by combining fruit from two contrasting Yarra Valley sites - warmer valley floor vineyards that contribute richness and spice, with high-altitude Upper Yarra fruit that adds citrus brightness and crisp acidity. This dual-site approach creates complexity that neither vineyard could achieve alone, demonstrating how skilled winemaking can balance opposing characteristics into a harmonious whole.

The 2017 vintage in Yarra Valley was marked by ideal growing conditions that allowed for extended hang time, crucial for developing the complex flavour profile evident in this wine. The season's moderate temperatures preserved the natural acidity from the high-altitude sites while allowing the valley floor fruit to develop full phenolic ripeness. This balance between freshness and richness is what makes 2017 Yarra Chardonnays particularly age-worthy and food-friendly.

The buttery notes come from malolactic fermentation and likely some oak influence, creating a creamy texture that's balanced by the bright grapefruit acidity from the high-altitude fruit. This classic Chardonnay tension between richness and freshness prevents the wine from becoming heavy or cloying. The toast elements from oak treatment act as a bridge, adding complexity while allowing both the creamy and citrus components to shine through distinct layers on the palate.

A textural Chardonnay emphasises mouthfeel and weight rather than just fruit flavours, creating a wine you can almost chew. This style typically involves techniques like lees stirring, partial malolactic fermentation, and careful oak integration to build layers of complexity. The full-bodied nature of this wine suggests it has substantial texture that coats the palate, making it ideal for pairing with richer dishes like roasted chicken or creamy seafood preparations.

While this 2017 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now with its balanced integration of fruit, oak, and acidity, quality Yarra Valley Chardonnays often develop additional complexity with 3-5 years of careful cellaring. The wine's full-bodied structure and high-altitude acidity provide the backbone for graceful ageing, where the buttery and toast elements will meld further while maintaining the bright grapefruit lift. For immediate enjoyment, decant for 30 minutes to allow the textural elements to fully express themselves.
