This is a classic, an icon, a staple, a wine built so deeply into the fabric of the Yarra Valley itself that it's impossible to separate the two. And here's the thing about 2017 Yarra Valley chardonnay, we were drinking them back then, we were drinking them in 2020 and we're still drinking them in 2025 - what a year for chardy.

Why do we love this wine?

Age has done some really cool stuff to this wine... It glides across the palate with that slippery, almost silky texture before the fruit steps up - white peach, lemon juice, a hint of fig. There’s even this faint cheesy funk (the good kind) that adds character, all pulled into line by bright, zippy acidity. Lees ageing and a sprinkling of oak bring creamy depth and that slow, rolling finish that just works. This is one of the greatest wineries in the Yarra, if not the country, we thought they were all out of the 2017, our prayers have been answered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Museum releases represent wines that have been cellared by the winery for extended periods, allowing them to develop complex tertiary characteristics that can't be achieved in young wines. This 2017 Chardonnay has developed that distinctive 'cheesy funk' and silky texture that comes from bottle ageing, transforming the primary fruit flavours into more nuanced expressions of white peach and fig. The extended cellaring has also integrated the oak and lees influences, creating the seamless, rolling finish that defines premium aged Chardonnay.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for elegant Chardonnay production. The region's temperature variations allow for slow, even ripening that preserves natural acidity while developing complex flavours - exactly what you taste in this wine's bright, zippy acidity balanced with rich fruit character. The valley's reputation for producing some of Australia's finest Chardonnays is built on this ability to achieve both power and finesse, as demonstrated by this full-bodied yet refined example.

Lees ageing involves leaving the wine in contact with dead yeast cells after fermentation, which gradually break down and release proteins and compounds that create a creamy, almost buttery mouthfeel. This traditional technique, combined with careful oak integration, gives the wine its distinctive slippery, silky texture that glides across the palate. The process also adds subtle complexity and helps integrate all the flavour components, contributing to that slow, satisfying finish that makes this Chardonnay so compelling.

This wine's creamy texture and mineral backbone make it perfect for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The wine's developed complexity and subtle oak can stand up to roasted chicken with herbs, while its bright acidity cuts through creamy pasta dishes or aged cheeses. The hint of 'cheesy funk' in the wine actually makes it an excellent match for soft-ripened cheeses like brie or camembert, creating harmonious flavour echoes.

Premium wineries often release limited quantities of their best vintages, and once they're gone, they're truly gone forever. This producer is recognised as one of Australia's greatest, earning Five Red Star Halliday status, which means their wines are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. The 2017 vintage has had time to develop its complex characteristics, making it particularly desirable, and the winery's belief that they were sold out suggests this really could be among the final bottles of this exceptional wine.
