This is Yarra Valley chardonnay that's as generous as it is sophisticated... Grapefruit, nuts, lemon pith, oak and lanolin all greet you before the wine has even touched your lips. The palate goes to another level of complexity, trying to pick individual notes is like picking individual voices in a choir. And why should we? If the song sounds good, let 'em sing - and the wine is certainly singing after a decade in the dark.

Why do we love this wine?

The Yarra Valley has long provided some of the finest chardonnays made in this country, and this recent release - young though it may be - reinforces that reputation emphatically. This is seriously impressive stuff with an exciting future ahead. Instantly identifiable as Yarra chardonnay, the wine is concentrated and elegant and energetic and mouth-filling, all at the same time. It speaks of place, and you could do much worse than speak about the gorgeous vineyards of the Yarra Valley and its many surrounding hills. As we said - this place has been pumping out some of the best chardonnays in the country for a very long time - just check Halliday's Chardonnay Challenge!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create ideal conditions for producing elegant, complex Chardonnays that balance power with finesse. The region's elevation and proximity to Melbourne's cooling influences allow for extended ripening periods, resulting in wines with natural acidity and distinctive minerality. This terroir consistently produces Chardonnays that are both concentrated and energetic, earning recognition in competitions like Halliday's Chardonnay Challenge.

At nearly a decade old, this 2014 Chardonnay has moved beyond its primary fruit phase into secondary development, where oak integration becomes seamless and complex flavours emerge. The buttery, toasty characteristics have had time to meld beautifully with the wine's natural acidity. While described as having 'an exciting future ahead,' it's currently in an excellent drinking window where both youthful energy and mature complexity coexist.

The wine's rich, buttery profile and oak influence make it perfect for creamy dishes like lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with herbs, or mushroom risotto. The toasty notes complement grilled seafood beautifully, while the full body can stand up to richer preparations like pork belly or veal. The wine's elegance also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring truffle or other earthy flavours.

Black Market Deals typically indicate exceptional value wines from boutique producers who prefer to remain anonymous, often due to existing distribution agreements or brand positioning. This allows wine lovers to access premium quality at significantly reduced prices. Given this wine's boutique producer status and staff pick recognition, you're likely getting a wine that would normally retail for considerably more under its full label.

Serve this full-bodied Chardonnay slightly warmer than typical whites - around 12-14°C - to allow its complex oak and buttery characteristics to fully express themselves. If storing, keep bottles on their side in a cool, dark place as the wine still has development potential. Consider decanting or allowing the wine to breathe for 15-20 minutes after opening, as the oak integration and concentrated nature will benefit from aeration.
