A decade in and still firmly in the 'Drink now or Hold' category - this has age-worthiness stitched into every fibre of its being. So much on offer and yet so much left to give.

Why do we love this wine?

The 2014 vintage in the Yarra Valley was marked by low yields, but what was produced was excellent - a 'near perfect' late growing season. The resulting wines, while scarce, were focused, intense and long lived. I say all that because this wine typifies that excellence to a tee - bright snappy citrus sits on the back of complex stoney minerality. Above all else, it feels sophisticated and high brow. This is borrowing a little limelight from the whites of Burgundy for me, it might even be a contender to steal that focus for good. There is lanolin, cashew, and lemon flesh on offer, and the finish is tinged by subtle salinity. While there are flashes of age throughout, the wine is still marked by freshness and vibrancy. This is a brilliant wine that is equal parts academic and delicious. A must have for anyone who considers themselves a part of the chardy fan club.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2014 vintage was exceptional in the Yarra Valley due to low yields and a near-perfect late growing season, creating wines with remarkable concentration and longevity. This particular Chardonnay has developed beautiful complexity over nearly a decade, showing sophisticated mineral notes and Burgundian characteristics while retaining its core freshness. Museum releases like this demonstrate how premium Australian Chardonnay can age gracefully, developing tertiary flavours that rival the world's finest white wines.

This wine exhibits the hallmark minerality and sophisticated structure that defines great white Burgundy, with complex stoney notes underpinning bright citrus flavours. The lanolin and cashew characteristics, combined with subtle salinity, mirror the textural complexity found in premium Chablis and Côte de Beaune wines. The Yarra Valley's cool climate and ancient soils create similar conditions to Burgundy, allowing Chardonnay to develop this level of finesse and terroir expression.

Serve this wine slightly warmer than typical whites, around 12-14°C, to allow its complex mineral and nutty flavours to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30 minutes will help integrate the mature elements and showcase the wine's sophisticated character. The full-bodied nature and developed flavours make it perfect for pairing with rich seafood dishes, roasted chicken, or creamy mushroom risotto that can match its intensity.

After a decade of careful ageing, this Chardonnay has evolved beyond its primary fruit flavours to develop complex secondary and tertiary notes like lanolin, cashew, and mineral salinity. The original grapefruit and honeysuckle have integrated with these mature characteristics, creating layers of flavour that unfold gradually on the palate. Despite its age, the wine maintains remarkable freshness and vibrancy, demonstrating the exceptional quality of the 2014 vintage.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with perfect balance between maturity and freshness, premium Yarra Valley Chardonnays from exceptional vintages like 2014 can continue developing for several more years. The wine's mineral backbone and natural acidity provide the structure needed for extended ageing, though it's already reached a wonderful drinking window. If you enjoy the current complexity, drink it now, but those seeking even more tertiary development could cellar it for another 3-5 years.
