Power and elegance. Creamy and rounded yet still lively and vibrant, even with 10+ years under its belt. This age has created an harmonious wine; fruit, acid, oak, dairy, pastry, all rolled into one complex, yet accessible, bottle of wine.

Why do we love this wine?

To be fair, Margaret River rarely has a challenging vintage, but the 2013 was nothing short of exceptional, particularly for chardonnay. Beautifully balanced, wonderfully vibrant and patiently matured, this is a really special drop. Both the bouquet and the palate are chocka-block-full of white peach, green apple, fresh butter and seamlessly interwoven French oak. A vibrant acidic structure carries throughout and leads to a lingering finish with discernible hints of creamy oak. A classy wine with a beautiful mouthfeel and exemplary fruit concentration. You won't be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2013 vintage was exceptional in Margaret River due to ideal growing conditions that produced perfectly balanced fruit with concentrated flavours. This vintage allowed the chardonnay grapes to develop complex aromatics while maintaining vibrant acidity, creating wines with both power and elegance. The extended ripening period resulted in fruit that could handle oak integration beautifully, making 2013 one of the standout years for premium Australian chardonnay.

The French oak in this chardonnay provides subtle vanilla and spice notes while adding textural complexity without overwhelming the fruit. French oak barrels allow for gentle micro-oxygenation, which helps develop the wine's creamy mouthfeel and integrates seamlessly with the white peach and green apple flavours. The oak contributes to the wine's full-bodied structure and lingering finish, demonstrating the classic Margaret River approach to premium chardonnay production.

This wine achieves its full-bodied character through a combination of ripe fruit concentration, extended lees contact, and careful oak maturation. The rich white peach and butter flavours, combined with the creamy texture, create substantial weight on the palate. Margaret River's warm climate allows chardonnay to develop this intensity while the region's cooling ocean breezes preserve the vibrant acidity that prevents the wine from becoming heavy or cloying.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to showcase its complex aromatics and full-bodied texture. The rich, creamy profile pairs beautifully with lobster, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes, while the vibrant acidity cuts through rich sauces. Consider pairing with aged cheeses or dishes featuring butter and herbs, as the wine's oak integration and fruit concentration can stand up to bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

A 96-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian chardonnays. Halliday's scoring system considers balance, complexity, length, and typicity, meaning this wine demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship and regional character. Such high scores are reserved for wines that show perfect harmony between fruit, oak, and acidity, with the potential for graceful ageing and memorable drinking experiences.
