Power and elegance. Buttery and rounded yet still lively and vibrant, even with 16 years under its belt. This age has created an harmonious wine; fruit, acid, oak, dairy, pastry, all rolled into one complex, yet accessible, bottle of wine.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

To be fair, Margaret River rarely has a challenging vintage, but 2009 was nothing short of exceptional, particularly for chardonnay. Beautifully balanced, wonderfully vibrant and patiently matured, this is a really special drop. Both the bouquet and the palate are chocka-block-full of white peach, green apple, fresh butter and seamlessly interwoven French oak. A vibrant acidic structure carries throughout and leads to a lingering finish with discernible hints of creamy oak. A classy wine with a beautiful mouthfeel and exemplary fruit concentration. You won't be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2009 vintage in Margaret River benefited from ideal climatic conditions that allowed for extended ripening without stress, resulting in perfect balance between fruit concentration and natural acidity. This vintage is particularly renowned for producing Chardonnays with exceptional longevity and complexity. The combination of warm days and cool nights during the growing season created optimal conditions for developing the rich fruit flavours while maintaining the crisp acidic backbone that makes this wine so compelling even after years of cellaring.

The French oak in this Chardonnay has been seamlessly integrated rather than dominating the fruit, creating layers of complexity through subtle vanilla, spice, and creamy textures. French oak is prized for its tight grain structure which imparts more refined tannins and allows for slower, more controlled flavour extraction compared to American oak. The creamy oak hints in the finish suggest the wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation in barrel, a technique that converts sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, contributing to the wine's buttery characteristics and full-bodied mouthfeel.

Museum Release status indicates this wine has been carefully cellared by the producer for over a decade, allowing it to develop tertiary flavours and complexity that cannot be achieved in young wines. At 15 years of age, this Chardonnay has evolved beyond its primary fruit flavours to showcase honeyed notes, enhanced texture, and integrated oak that creates a more sophisticated drinking experience. The 94-point James Halliday rating confirms this wine's exceptional quality and aging potential, making it a rare opportunity to experience a fully mature, premium Margaret River Chardonnay.

Serve this full-bodied Chardonnay slightly chilled at 10-12°C to allow its complex aromatics and rich texture to shine without being muted by excessive cold. The wine's buttery, peachy profile with creamy oak makes it perfect for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with herbs, or creamy pasta with mushrooms. Given its maturity and concentration, this wine can also stand up to soft cheeses like brie or camembert, where the wine's acidity will cut through the richness while complementing the creamy textures.

This 2009 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, having reached its optimal maturity window where all elements are perfectly harmonised. While premium Margaret River Chardonnays can age for 15-20 years, this wine is at its peak expression with vibrant fruit still present alongside developed complexity. The lingering finish and exemplary fruit concentration suggest it will hold its quality for another 2-3 years, but there's no benefit in further cellaring as the wine has already achieved its full potential and any further aging may see the fruit begin to fade.
