Power and elegance. Buttery and rounded yet still lively and vibrant, even with 16 years under its belt. This age has created an harmonious wine; fruit, acid, oak, dairy, pastry, all rolled into one complex, yet accessible, bottle of wine.

Why do we love this wine?

To be fair, Margaret River rarely has a challenging vintage, but 2009 was nothing short of exceptional, particularly for chardonnay. Beautifully balanced, wonderfully vibrant and patiently matured, this is a really special drop. Both the bouquet and the palate are chocka-block-full of white peach, green apple, fresh butter and seamlessly interwoven French oak. A vibrant acidic structure carries throughout and leads to a lingering finish with discernible hints of creamy oak. A classy wine with a beautiful mouthfeel and exemplary fruit concentration. You won't be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2009 vintage stands out as exceptional for Margaret River, creating ideal conditions for chardonnay development. This vintage allowed for perfect ripening and concentration, resulting in wines with remarkable balance between fruit intensity and natural acidity. The extended growing season in 2009 enabled winemakers to achieve optimal flavour development while maintaining the elegant structure that Margaret River chardonnays are renowned for.

The French oak integration in this chardonnay demonstrates masterful winemaking technique, contributing creamy textures and subtle vanilla notes without overwhelming the fruit. French oak barrels allow for gentle micro-oxygenation during maturation, enhancing the wine's complexity while preserving its vibrant acidity. The seamless oak integration creates layers of flavour that complement the white peach and green apple characteristics, adding depth and a lingering finish.

This full-bodied style reflects both the exceptional 2009 vintage conditions and careful winemaking decisions that maximise fruit concentration and texture. The rich mouthfeel comes from extended lees contact and oak maturation, which builds palate weight while maintaining elegance. Margaret River's maritime climate allows chardonnay to develop intense flavours while retaining natural acidity, creating wines that are both powerful and refined.

Serve this mature chardonnay slightly warmer than typical whites, around 12-14°C, to fully appreciate its complex aromatics and rich texture. The wine's buttery character and oak integration make it perfect for roasted chicken, lobster with cream sauce, or aged hard cheeses. Its developed flavours and full body can stand up to richer dishes that would overpower younger, lighter chardonnays.

James Halliday's 94-point rating places this chardonnay in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity. Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics, reserves scores in the 94-96 range for wines showing remarkable balance, depth, and ageing potential. This rating suggests the wine demonstrates textbook Margaret River chardonnay characteristics while offering something special that sets it apart from typical regional examples.
