This is why Adelaide Hills is Australia's Grüner Veltliner capital. Hand-picked from Longview's low-yielding vines in early February, wild fermented in French oak, and blessed with that zippy, spicy character that makes Grüner so food-friendly. Six months on lees adds texture without losing the variety's signature freshness.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Grüner Veltliner is having its moment in Australia, and Adelaide Hills is leading the charge. The cool climate and elevation create the perfect conditions for this zippy Austrian variety to shine - and this Longview bottling shows exactly why smart winemakers are planting more of it every vintage. The attention to detail here is impressive. Hand-picked fruit from several clones ensures complexity, while low crop levels mean every berry was at optimum ripeness when it hit the press. Whole bunch pressing keeps things clean and precise, then wild fermentation in French oak barrels adds layers without masking the variety's natural character. Six months on lees builds texture and mouthfeel, while the restrained use of new oak (just 10%) lets the fruit do the talking. The result is classic Grüner - zippy acidity, subtle spice, and that food-friendly character that makes it the perfect wine for the dinner table. We won't lie - we're bloody besotted with this one!

A splendid rendition of the variety, showing rockmelon, feijoa, and lemon/lime peel aromas. The palate is equally appealing, with excellent weight and fleshy texture, resulting in a lingering, exuberant finish. At its best: now to 2030. $34.00. catlinwines.com.au. June 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

Australia's cool climate regions like Adelaide Hills provide the perfect conditions for this Austrian variety to thrive. The elevation and temperature variations mirror Gruner Veltliner's homeland, allowing it to develop its characteristic zippy acidity and subtle spice notes. Australian winemakers are discovering that this variety offers something unique in our white wine landscape - a food-friendly alternative that bridges the gap between Sauvignon Blanc's intensity and Chardonnay's richness.

This Gruner Veltliner showcases a distinctly European winemaking approach with wild fermentation and extended lees contact, creating complexity without the heavy oak influence common in many Australian whites. The hand-picking of multiple clones and whole bunch pressing preserves the variety's natural character, resulting in a wine with mineral precision rather than tropical fruit dominance. It's this restraint and focus on terroir expression that sets it apart from more mainstream Australian white wine styles.

Serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its crisp acidity and delicate aromatics. The white pepper spice and citrus notes make it exceptional with Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or mild chilli. Its light body and mineral finish also complement seafood beautifully, while the subtle complexity pairs wonderfully with herb-crusted chicken or creamy pasta dishes without overwhelming delicate flavours.

Wild fermentation uses naturally occurring yeasts from the vineyard rather than commercial strains, creating more complex and unpredictable flavour development. This traditional technique often produces subtle savoury notes and textural interest that complement Gruner Veltliner's natural spiciness. The process is slower and less controlled, but it allows the wine to express its terroir more authentically, contributing to the mineral backbone and food-friendly character that makes this variety so versatile.

While this 2018 vintage is drinking beautifully now with its fresh grapefruit and rockmelon flavours at their peak, Gruner Veltliner has excellent aging potential. The wine's natural acidity and mineral structure will allow it to develop more complex honeyed notes and deeper texture over the next 3-5 years. The restrained oak treatment and quality winemaking suggest this bottle will reward patience, though its current vibrancy makes it equally enjoyable for immediate consumption.
