Why do we love this wine?

This is, once again, an outstanding wine that speaks to the lofty heights New Zealand achieves when it comes to beloved chardonnay. The brightness of the wine finds every corner of your mouth in an all consuming way, but the pithy, whole citrus weight of the wine is tucked deftly in behind. There is a thread of salinity and spice that runs throughout the Lord Rutherford vintages, giving them a savoury, moreish backbone. Compelling stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nelson's unique terroir combines maritime influences with extended sunshine hours, creating perfect conditions for Chardonnay development. The region's clay-rich soils and cool nights help retain natural acidity while allowing full flavour development. This climate allows producers like Brightwater to craft wines with both power and elegance, achieving the balance of citrus brightness and savoury complexity that defines great New Zealand Chardonnay.

The Lord Rutherford's full-bodied weight and savoury backbone make it exceptionally versatile with rich dishes. Its citrus brightness cuts through creamy sauces and butter-based preparations, while the nutty, toasty elements complement roasted poultry and seafood. The wine's salinity and spice thread pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and dishes featuring herbs like thyme or rosemary.

Receiving 95 points from both Peter Saunders and Wine Orbit places this Chardonnay in the 'outstanding' category, representing the top 5% of wines reviewed. This dual recognition from respected critics indicates exceptional craftsmanship and suggests the wine will develop beautifully over time. Such high scores typically reflect perfect balance, complexity, and the wine's ability to express its terroir distinctively.

Serve at 10-12°C to allow the full spectrum of flavours to emerge properly. The cooler temperature will highlight the citrus brightness initially, while the wine warms in the glass to reveal its nutty, toasty complexity. Use a larger bowl glass to concentrate the aromatics, and consider decanting if the wine seems tight upon opening, as this full-bodied style benefits from brief aeration.

While delicious now, this premium Chardonnay will continue developing complexity through 2027-2030. The wine's structure and acidity suggest it will evolve from its current bright, citrus-forward character towards more honeyed, nutty flavours over time. The savoury backbone and mineral thread will help preserve freshness throughout its drinking window, making it rewarding whether enjoyed young or with several years of cellaring.
