Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Fine boned - slightly more precise than the opulent '18 - with zesty citrus at the core of the citrus profile. A nutty almond dust gives varietal richness, maritime salinity provides a savoury edge, and sweet baking spices and vanilla mark the oak integration. You can see how it will develop - there is some flashes of burnt meringue amongst the butterscotch goodness. The finish is lasting and underscored by resolute acidity - chardonnay lovers rejoice at this delight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2019 Lord Rutherford shows a more restrained, precise character compared to the opulent 2018 vintage. This shift reflects how vintage conditions can dramatically influence a wine's personality - cooler growing seasons often produce wines with better natural acidity and more focused fruit flavours. The 2019's 'fine boned' structure suggests it may age more gracefully, developing complexity over time rather than showing all its cards immediately.

Nelson's maritime climate contributes the distinctive salinity that gives this Chardonnay its savoury edge - a hallmark of cool-climate coastal regions. The region's long, dry autumns allow for extended hang time, developing the complex citrus profile while maintaining the crisp acidity that makes this wine so food-friendly. Nelson's clay-rich soils also contribute to the wine's full-bodied texture and mineral backbone.

Barrique refers to the traditional 225-litre French oak barrels used for fermentation and ageing. In this wine, the oak integration shows as sweet baking spices and vanilla, while contributing to the nutty almond dust character. The barrel fermentation also adds textural richness and helps develop those complex burnt meringue notes that will emerge as the wine matures, creating a more sophisticated flavour profile than stainless steel fermentation alone.

With its resolute acidity backbone and 94-point rating, this Chardonnay has excellent cellaring potential of 5-8 years from vintage. As it develops, expect the current zesty citrus to evolve into more honeyed, toasty characters, while those hints of burnt meringue will become more pronounced. The maritime salinity will integrate further, creating a more seamless, complex wine that showcases the full potential of premium Nelson Chardonnay.

The wine's maritime salinity and full body make it perfect for seafood with rich sauces - think lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with brown butter. The nutty, spiced oak characters complement roasted chicken or pork with herb crusts, while the underlying acidity cuts through creamy pasta dishes. The butterscotch notes also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses, creating a sophisticated cheese course pairing.
