Possibly one of the greatest collections from my Riojan travels, and a rare one at that. White tempranillo is not something you'll see broadly in the market because of its limited production, but this is one wine that you'll never forget.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

On my trip through Rioja, amongst rolling hills and endless sunshine, I drank a lot of reds. Rioja is best known for its robust tempranillo, and of those there are plenty. While sitting down for a tasting at Bodegas Ondarre with the smell of fresh oak barrels permeating the air, I was utterly transfixed with this outstanding bottle of white. Picked from rare white tempranillo vines (or, tempranillo blanco as it's called locally), this small batch wine goes to fermentation and ageing in both French and American oak barrels. What does that all mean? A wine that is both delicately nuanced with white florals, green apple and sandalwood; while packing a full-bodied, vanilla soaked punch. This is one wine I will never forget, and I'm sure you won't either.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine is crafted from tempranillo blanco, a rare white mutation of the famous red tempranillo grape that Rioja is renowned for. While most Rioja producers focus on robust red wines, Bodegas Ondarre has created something exceptional by fermenting and ageing this white tempranillo in both French and American oak barrels. This dual-oak approach creates a fascinating contrast between delicate floral notes and rich, vanilla-laden complexity that's quite unusual for the region.

The combination of French and American oak barrels creates a sophisticated layering of flavours that elevates this wine beyond typical white wine expectations. French oak contributes subtle spice and refined tannins, while American oak imparts the distinctive vanilla and coconut notes. This dual-barrel ageing process allows the wine to maintain its fresh white floral and green apple characteristics whilst developing a full-bodied, creamy texture that's both elegant and powerful.

Given its rich, oaky character and full body, this wine can handle more substantial dishes than typical white wines. The vanilla and sandalwood notes make it excellent with roasted chicken, creamy seafood dishes, or even light pork preparations. The minerality and melon flavours also complement aged cheeses beautifully, while the oak structure allows it to stand up to dishes with cream-based sauces or even lightly spiced cuisine.

Tempranillo blanco is actually quite rare, discovered as a natural mutation of red tempranillo in the 1980s in Rioja. Only a handful of producers work with this variety, making wines like this Valdebarón particularly special. The grape retains the structural integrity of its red parent but expresses completely different aromatic compounds, creating wines with unique complexity. This scarcity means you're experiencing something that represents less than 1% of Rioja's total production.

Serve this wine slightly warmer than typical whites, around 10-12°C, to fully appreciate its complex oak integration and full-bodied character. The wine's structure and oak treatment mean it can benefit from brief decanting or simply opening 30 minutes before serving. Store it in a cool, dark place lying on its side, and given its small batch nature and oak ageing, it should drink beautifully now but can also develop further complexity over the next 3-5 years.
