Soave is a region in Veneto that produces exclusively white wines, primarily from the native grape garganega. Most of the wines are dry, citrusy and minerally. Younger Soave, such as this bottle from Rocca Bastia, is bright, gentle on the palate and surprisingly floral.

Why do we love this wine?

Soave ages very well, developing more orange and toasted almond characteristics as time goes on. The acidity is quite moderate, making for the perfect pairing with a variety of seafood dishes. Rocca Bastia is produced by Bennati, a family run winery in Veneto that was started 100 years ago by Antonio Bennati and his son Annibale. Now under the care of the fourth generation, Bennati has been upholding its family traditions while advancing its winemaking techniques. This Soave is the perfect example of a classic Italian wine crafted in a smooth and flawless modern style. With summer always around the corner, is there any better advice than to drink as the Italians do?

Frequently Asked Questions

This Soave Classico represents the perfect marriage of century-old family traditions with modern winemaking precision. Unlike many Italian whites that focus purely on minerality, this wine showcases the unique terroir of the Soave DOC through its distinctive combination of citrus brightness and stone fruit richness. The Garganega grape variety, which forms the backbone of authentic Soave, creates a wine with moderate acidity that's more approachable than high-acid alternatives like Pinot Grigio, while still maintaining the elegant structure that Italian whites are renowned for.

Serve this Soave well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its fresh, juicy character and vibrant fruit flavours. The wine's light body and moderate acidity make it exceptionally versatile with seafood - think grilled prawns, pan-fried fish, or creamy risotto with scallops. The citrus and melon notes also complement lighter pasta dishes, fresh salads with stone fruits, and soft cheeses. Its smooth, modern style means it works beautifully as an aperitif or alongside Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

While delicious now in its youthful, fresh state, this Soave has excellent aging potential that many people overlook. Over the next 3-5 years, the wine will develop more complex characteristics, with the bright citrus notes evolving into richer orange peel flavours and the emergence of distinctive toasted almond notes. This transformation showcases the true quality of well-made Soave - what starts as a vibrant, fruit-forward wine gradually becomes more nuanced and sophisticated, offering a completely different but equally rewarding drinking experience.

Bennati represents four generations of Italian winemaking excellence, founded a century ago by Antonio Bennati and his son Annibale in the heart of Veneto. This family-run operation has successfully navigated the challenge that faces many traditional wineries - maintaining authentic regional character while embracing modern techniques that enhance quality and consistency. Their approach to this Soave demonstrates how contemporary Italian winemaking can honour traditional methods while producing wines that appeal to modern palates, creating what they describe as 'classic Italian wine crafted in a smooth and flawless modern style.'

The 'Classico' designation indicates this wine comes from the original, historic heart of the Soave region, where the best vineyard sites have been recognised for centuries. DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is Italy's quality assurance system, guaranteeing the wine meets strict standards for grape varieties, production methods, and regional authenticity. This means you're getting a wine that not only represents the true character of Soave's traditional terroir, but also adheres to regulations that preserve the integrity and reputation of this renowned Italian wine region.
