Why do we love this wine?

This pinot gris has been nurtured all the way through from vine to glass. All grapes are hand harvested, so you can be sure you are drinking only the finest grapes. Gentle floral aromas and concentrated pear and apricots take the palate by hold. After being delicately aged on lees, a subtle nuttiness shines through with lingering mineral notes giving balance. It is composed and complex, displaying all the wonders Central Otago wine has to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Central Otago's continental climate with hot days and cool nights creates perfect conditions for Pinot Gris, allowing the grapes to develop concentrated flavours while retaining natural acidity. The region's schist soils contribute to the mineral backbone evident in this wine, while the extreme diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the delicate floral aromatics that make Central Otago Pinot Gris so distinctive. This terroir expression is beautifully captured in Bendigo Hills' hand-harvested fruit.

Lees ageing involves leaving the wine in contact with dead yeast cells after fermentation, which adds complexity and texture without the need for oak. In this Pinot Gris, the process has contributed a subtle nuttiness and enhanced mouthfeel, creating more body and richness than typical fresh-style Pinot Gris. The technique also helps integrate the mineral notes with the fruit flavours, resulting in a more sophisticated and food-friendly wine that can age gracefully.

Hand harvesting allows for selective picking of only perfectly ripe grapes, crucial for Pinot Gris which can vary in ripeness across individual bunches. This meticulous approach ensures optimal flavour concentration and prevents the inclusion of underripe or damaged fruit that could compromise the wine's delicate balance. The gentle handling also preserves the grape's natural aromatics and prevents premature oxidation, contributing to the wine's pure expression of pear and apricot flavours.

The wine's medium body and textural complexity make it ideal for dishes that can match its weight without overwhelming its delicate flavours. Think roasted chicken with herbs, creamy seafood risotto, or Asian cuisine with moderate spice levels where the mineral backbone can cut through rich sauces. The subtle nuttiness from lees ageing also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring almonds or hazelnuts, while the flinty minerality complements fresh oysters or goat's cheese.

A 94-point rating from Wine Orbit indicates exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of New Zealand Pinot Gris. Such high scores typically reflect perfect balance between fruit concentration, acidity, and complexity - evident in this wine's combination of concentrated stone fruit, floral elegance, and mineral finish. The five-star rating further confirms this is a standout example that showcases both varietal character and regional terroir expression at the highest level.
