Our friends at Auld Family Wines have literally never let us down - they've kept true to form here... This is a crisp, vibrant, citrusy Eden Valley riesling, but it's so much more than that. There's a hint of richness here that, coupled with the classic Eden acidity, creates a beautifully balanced wine that goes down a little too easily...

Why do we love this wine?

On the nose, this is a super floral wine, very much still on the zesty spectrum that you'd expect from the Eden Valley, but with a slight richness with notes of stone fruit and honey-blossom. The textural fruit and regional minerality sing in perfect harmony and set up a wine of impressive length that manages to hold on to a crisp, refreshing finish. Cellared carefully, this will comfortably continue aging and developing for another 8 to 10 years but that's the beauty of riesling isn't it - get stuck in whenever you want, it's absolutely humming right now!

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley sits at higher altitude in South Australia's Adelaide Hills, creating cooler conditions that preserve Riesling's natural acidity and develop its signature mineral backbone. The region's ancient soils and diurnal temperature variation allow for slow ripening, which builds complexity while maintaining the zesty, citrus-driven character this wine displays. This terroir produces Rieslings with exceptional aging potential and a distinctive regional minerality that sets them apart from warmer climate expressions.

This wine will comfortably develop for another 8-10 years when stored properly in cool, dark conditions. Riesling's high natural acidity acts as a preservative, allowing the wine to evolve from its current zesty, floral profile into more complex honeyed and petrol notes over time. The beauty of quality Riesling is its versatility - you can enjoy it now for its fresh vibrancy or cellar it to experience how the stone fruit and honey-blossom characteristics deepen and integrate.

Single vineyard wines like 'The Ernie' represent grapes sourced from one specific site rather than blended from multiple locations. This allows the unique characteristics of that particular plot - its soil composition, microclimate, and aspect - to shine through unfiltered. The result is typically more distinctive and terroir-driven wines that express a sense of place, often commanding higher prices due to their limited production and site-specific character that can't be replicated elsewhere.

Riesling's aromatic complexity comes from naturally occurring compounds called terpenes, the same molecules that give flowers and citrus their fragrance. The jasmine and honey-blossom notes develop from these terpenes interacting with the grape's natural acids during fermentation. Stone fruit characteristics emerge when the grapes achieve optimal ripeness in Eden Valley's cool climate, balancing sugar development with acid retention to create this layered aromatic profile that's both immediately appealing and cellar-worthy.

The wine's zesty acidity and medium body make it excellent with spicy Asian cuisine, particularly Thai or Vietnamese dishes where the slight richness can balance heat while the citrus notes complement fresh herbs. Its mineral backbone pairs beautifully with fresh seafood, especially oysters or grilled fish, while the stone fruit characteristics work wonderfully with pork dishes or creamy cheeses. The floral elements also make it a surprising match for aromatic dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass, or coriander.
