Our friends at Auld Family Wines have literally never let us down - they've kept true to form here... This is a crisp, vibrant, citrusy Eden Valley riesling, but it's so much more than that. There's a hint of richness here that, coupled with the classic Eden acidity, creates a beautifully balanced wine that goes down a little too easily..

Why do we love this wine?

On the nose, this is a super floral wine, very much still on the zesty spectrum that you'd expect from the Eden Valley, but with a slight richness with notes of stone fruit and honey-blossom. The textural fruit and regional minerality sing in perfect harmony and set up a wine of impressive length that manages to hold on to a crisp, refreshing finish. Cellared carefully, this will comfortably continue aging and developing for another 8 to 10 years but that's the beauty of riesling isn't it - get stuck in whenever you want, it's absolutely humming right now!

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley's high altitude and cool climate create the perfect conditions for riesling's signature zesty character and mineral backbone. The region's ancient soils contribute to that distinctive regional minerality mentioned in this wine, while the temperature variations between day and night help preserve the grape's natural acidity. This combination results in rieslings with exceptional aging potential and the ability to develop complex honeyed notes over time whilst maintaining their crisp freshness.

This wine showcases riesling's remarkable versatility - it's drinking beautifully right now with its vibrant floral aromatics and stone fruit flavours. However, with careful cellaring, it will continue developing for another 8-10 years, gradually building more complex honey and petrol notes that aged rieslings are famous for. The key is proper storage in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature to preserve that essential acidity that gives riesling its aging power.

Single vineyard wines like 'The Ernie' come from grapes grown in one specific plot, allowing the unique characteristics of that particular site to shine through. This means you're tasting the pure expression of one terroir - the soil, slope, aspect and microclimate of that exact location. It's like comparing a solo performance to an orchestra; single vineyard wines offer more focused, distinctive flavours and often represent the producer's premium fruit from their best sites.

This beautiful contradiction is what makes great riesling so compelling - the grape naturally maintains high acidity (creating that zesty, citrusy backbone) while simultaneously developing rich stone fruit flavours and floral complexity. The Eden Valley's cool climate preserves the zesty freshness, while the 2024 vintage's growing conditions allowed for optimal ripeness, creating those honeyed, textural elements. This balance is the hallmark of premium Australian riesling.

The wine's floral aromatics and citrus-driven acidity make it exceptional with Asian cuisine, particularly Thai or Vietnamese dishes where the wine's sweetness level can balance spice and its acidity cuts through rich coconut-based sauces. The stone fruit notes also complement pork dishes, while the mineral backbone pairs beautifully with fresh seafood like oysters or ceviche. For cheese, try it with aged goat's cheese where the wine's complexity can match the cheese's tangy intensity.
