This isn't just any chardonnay. This is the wine that put Adrian Rodda at the absolute pinnacle of Australian winemaking - and it comes from vines that have been quietly perfecting their craft since 1978. These aren't just old vines, they're the foundation of Beechworth's wine legacy.

Why do we love this wine?

When the 2015 Young Gun of Wine winner moved to Beechworth in 2010, he had one obsession: to make the ultimate chardonnay from the oldest vines in the region. The Smiths Vineyard, planted 46 years ago at 550 metres elevation, sits at the sweet spot where Beechworth's legendary shaley red Ordovician soil meets granite - creating the perfect 'terroir storm' for world-class chardonnay. Here's what we're tasting: Tightly wound and multi-dimensional, with a minerally spine that runs through every sip like a thread of pure elegance. The palate holds prodigious length that keeps revealing new layers long after your last sip. It's powerful yet refined, complex and, most importantly, utterly delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Smiths Vineyard represents a rare geological convergence where Beechworth's famous shaley red Ordovician soil meets granite at 550 metres elevation. This unique terroir combination, coupled with 46-year-old vines, creates ideal conditions for chardonnay as the varied soil types provide both mineral complexity and excellent drainage. The elevation ensures cool nights that preserve acidity while the ancient vines contribute concentrated flavours and natural balance.

This wine showcases the cooler climate Beechworth style that differs markedly from warmer Australian regions. The minerally spine and tightly wound structure reflect the high-altitude vineyard and old vine concentration, creating a more European-influenced profile. Unlike many Australian chardonnays that emphasise tropical fruit, this wine prioritises elegance, length, and mineral complexity that develops beautifully with age.

Museum Release indicates this 2016 chardonnay has been carefully cellared by the winery for optimal drinking maturity, now eight years post-vintage. This extended ageing allows the wine's complex layers to integrate fully while developing tertiary flavours that complement the primary fruit and mineral characteristics. The designation suggests this bottle represents the wine at its peak drinking window, offering collectors a perfectly aged expression.

The allspice and almond notes indicate sophisticated winemaking techniques, likely including partial malolactic fermentation and careful oak integration. Allspice suggests warm spice complexity that develops through extended lees contact and bottle ageing, while almond flavours often emerge from quality French oak and the natural evolution of chardonnay. These flavours complement the wine's mineral backbone, creating a harmonious balance between fruit, spice, and textural elements.

The wine's mineral spine and full body make it ideal for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with brown butter. The allspice and almond characteristics pair beautifully with roasted chicken with herbs or creamy mushroom risotto. The wine's complexity and length also complement aged hard cheeses, while its elegance won't overpower delicate preparations like poached salmon with hollandaise sauce.
