Why do we love this wine?

When the 2015 Young Gun of Wine winner moved to Beechworth in 2010, he had one obsession: to make the ultimate chardonnay from the oldest vines in the region. The Smiths Vineyard, planted 46 years ago at 550 metres elevation, sits at the sweet spot where Beechworth's legendary shaley red Ordovician soil meets granite - creating the perfect 'terroir storm' for world-class chardonnay. Here's what we're tasting: Tightly wound and multi-dimensional, with a minerally spine that runs through every sip like a thread of pure elegance. The palate holds prodigious length that keeps revealing new layers long after your last sip. It's powerful yet refined, complex and, most importantly, utterly delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Smiths Vineyard sits at the geological intersection where Beechworth's famous shaley red Ordovician soil meets granite at 550 metres elevation. This unique soil composition creates exceptional drainage and mineral complexity, while the elevation provides the cool climate conditions that allow chardonnay grapes to develop intense flavours whilst maintaining natural acidity. The 46-year-old vines have deep root systems that tap into these diverse soil layers, extracting the mineral complexity that defines great Beechworth chardonnay.

As a Museum Release with 90-point ratings, the 2016 represents A. Rodda at peak form during the early years of his Beechworth venture. This vintage captures the intensity and focus that comes from old vines combined with the winemaker's obsessive attention to expressing terroir. The wine's tightly wound structure and prodigious length suggest it was made during ideal vintage conditions that allowed for extended hang time and optimal flavour development.

The wine's minerally spine and allspice notes make it exceptional with roasted poultry, particularly duck or chicken with herb crusts. The almond characteristics complement seafood dishes with creamy sauces, while the full-bodied palate weight can stand up to rich pasta dishes with mushroom or truffle elements. The wine's complexity and length also make it suitable for aged hard cheeses, where the mineral backbone cuts through richness whilst the fruit flavours provide balance.

A. Rodda earned the 2015 Young Gun of Wine award, recognising exceptional talent early in his career, and his singular focus on expressing Beechworth's unique terroir through chardonnay has quickly established his reputation. Working with some of the region's oldest vines and achieving the perfect balance between power and refinement demonstrates the kind of winemaking vision that creates iconic status. The combination of exceptional vineyard sites, meticulous winemaking, and consistent quality has positioned A. Rodda as a defining producer of modern Australian chardonnay.

Serve at 10-12°C to allow the mineral complexity and layered flavours to fully express themselves without being masked by excessive chill. As a Museum Release from 2016, this wine is drinking beautifully now, having developed tertiary flavours that add complexity to the primary fruit and oak integration. The wine's structure suggests it will continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, with the mineral backbone providing the framework for extended cellaring potential.
