We are big fans of Pirramimma here at the ‘fo - enjoying their bold and powerful reds from across the range. This ‘Limited Edition’ sparkling shiraz comes from the best rows of their famous “War Horse” and “Ironstone” blocks. The vines are old and what they lack in quantity (yield), they make up for in superb quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike traditional sparkling wines made from white grapes, this sparkling shiraz showcases the bold character of red wine in effervescent form. The bubbles enhance the wine's natural spice and pepper notes while maintaining the rich blackberry and plum flavours typical of McLaren Vale shiraz. This style originated in Australia and represents a uniquely Australian approach to sparkling wine production, offering wine lovers the best of both worlds - the celebration factor of bubbles with the complexity of premium red wine.

This limited edition status reflects the wine's sourcing from only the finest rows of Pirramimma's renowned 'War Horse' and 'Ironstone' vineyard blocks. These old vines naturally produce lower yields, concentrating flavours and creating more intense, complex wines. The limited production means greater attention to detail in both vineyard management and winemaking, resulting in a premium expression that showcases the very best fruit from these celebrated McLaren Vale sites.

Serve this sparkling shiraz slightly chilled at around 12-14°C to highlight both its effervescence and rich fruit character. The wine's bold flavours and spice make it perfect for hearty dishes like barbecued meats, rich pasta with tomato-based sauces, or aged cheeses. Its festive bubbles also make it an excellent choice for celebrations where you want something more substantial than traditional sparkling wine, particularly during cooler months or with game dishes.

The mocha and cedar characteristics suggest this sparkling shiraz has been carefully aged, likely spending time in oak barrels before the secondary fermentation that creates the bubbles. These flavours develop through the interaction between the wine and oak, adding complexity and depth beyond the primary fruit flavours. The presence of these tertiary notes indicates a more sophisticated winemaking approach, where the producer has balanced the wine's natural fruit intensity with subtle oak influence to create layers of flavour.

This sparkling shiraz is designed to be enjoyed upon release, as the bubbles are at their most vibrant and the fruit-oak balance is perfectly integrated. However, the quality fruit from old vines and the wine's complexity suggest it could develop further interesting characteristics over 2-3 years if stored properly. The rich blackberry and spice profile will likely evolve, potentially developing more savoury and earthy notes while maintaining its essential character, though the effervescence will gradually diminish over time.
