Why do we love this wine?

E.J. Carr and his legendary House of Arras are commonly considered the best sparkling producer in all of Australia, one that rivals the top houses of Champagne. This is their Brut Elite, an NV sparkling composed of 61.9% pinot noir, 29.2% chardonnay, 8.9% pinot meunier. It leans towards light-bodied, extra brut and fresh. There’s elegance abounding, a refreshing crispness and plenty of subtle notes of mushroom, lychee, brioche, oyster and peach. And if medals are your thing, Brute Elite has a nice collection of trophies and golds. So if you love Champagne but want to drink Australian wines, you really can’t find a bottle more fitting than this.

Frequently Asked Questions

House of Arras follows the traditional méthode champenoise using the classic Champagne grape varieties - pinot noir (61.9%), chardonnay (29.2%), and pinot meunier (8.9%). Tasmania's cool climate and limestone-rich soils mirror those of Champagne, allowing E.J. Carr to create sparkling wines with the same elegance and complexity. The recognition as 'Sparkling Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge validates their world-class approach to traditional method sparkling wine production.

Tasmania's cool maritime climate provides the perfect conditions for growing sparkling wine grapes, with long, slow ripening seasons that preserve natural acidity while developing complex flavours. The island's latitude of 42°S is similar to Champagne's position, creating comparable growing conditions. This climate allows the grapes to retain the crisp acidity essential for premium sparkling wine while developing the subtle complexity evident in the brioche and oyster shell notes of this Brut Elite.

Extra brut indicates this sparkling wine contains less than 6 grams of residual sugar per litre, making it drier than standard brut styles. This minimal dosage allows the wine's natural fruit character and mineral complexity to shine through without sweetness masking the delicate flavours. The extra brut style enhances the wine's food-pairing versatility and showcases the pure expression of Tasmania's terroir, particularly the flinty, oyster shell minerality that defines premium cool-climate sparkling wines.

Serve chilled at 6-8°C in flute or tulip glasses to preserve the fine mousse and concentrate the delicate aromas. The wine's oyster shell minerality and brioche complexity make it exceptional with fresh seafood, particularly oysters, sashimi, or lobster. Its extra brut style also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses, charcuterie, or as an elegant aperitif, while the wine's award-winning pedigree makes it suitable for special celebrations or fine dining experiences.

The complex flavour profile of mushroom, lychee, brioche, oyster shell, and peach indicates extended lees ageing, which develops the characteristic yeasty, biscuity notes prized in premium sparkling wines. These diverse tasting notes demonstrate the wine's layered complexity - from the fresh fruit (lychee, peach) to the savoury elements (mushroom, oyster shell) developed through traditional production methods. The 95-point Halliday rating and multiple gold medals confirm this complexity translates to exceptional quality in the glass.
