100% grenache rosé. 100% delicious. That's our two big takeaways from Patritti's 'Amico' rosé, which is designed to be enjoyed just as the name suggests: jovially and with good friends.

Why do we love this wine?

Raspberry coulis, white strawberry, thyme and a hint of creamy complexity all abound in this delicious drop. Patritti are no strangers to good wine. In fact, we can't recall a time that they missed the mark with anything coming out of their storied winery. This grenache based rosé comes off a single estate vineyard in McLaren Vale (which was planted back in the mid 20th century!) If you want to feel pretty pleased with yourself, pick up a case of this winner and enjoy the good times that will come.

"It's elegantly fragrant on the nose, showing wild strawberry, lemon peel, Gala apple, and subtle spice aromas. The palate delivers a linear mouthfeel with fine texture and zesty acidity, finishing lingering and crisp-dry. Delicate yet persistent, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2027" - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

This grenache-based rosé showcases the distinctive character of old vines planted in the mid-20th century, creating layers of complexity rarely found in younger vineyard rosés. The single estate McLaren Vale fruit delivers concentrated flavours of raspberry coulis and white strawberry, while subtle thyme notes add an herbaceous sophistication. Unlike mass-produced rosés that can be one-dimensional, the creamy complexity here suggests extended lees contact or careful winemaking techniques that elevate it beyond simple summer sippers.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for grenache, allowing the variety to develop intense fruit flavours while maintaining natural acidity. The region's proximity to the ocean moderates temperatures, preventing the grape from becoming overly jammy - crucial for elegant rosé production. This particular vineyard's mid-20th century planting means the vines have developed deep root systems and natural balance, contributing to the wine's remarkable 94-point Wine Orbit rating and complex flavour profile.

Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight the crisp, dry style and preserve the delicate strawberry and citrus aromatics. The wine's light body and herbaceous thyme notes make it exceptional with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes featuring fresh herbs, grilled seafood, or charcuterie. The raspberry coulis character also complements Asian fusion dishes with subtle spice, while the creamy complexity allows it to stand up to richer preparations like salmon or goat cheese salads.

Old vines, like those planted in McLaren Vale during the mid-20th century, naturally produce lower yields of more concentrated fruit, resulting in wines with greater depth and complexity. These mature vines have extensive root systems that access deeper soil layers and minerals, contributing to the wine's sophisticated flavour profile beyond simple fruit characters. The vine age also means better natural balance between sugar and acidity, explaining why this rosé achieves such remarkable ratings while maintaining its crisp, dry style.

While most rosés are designed for immediate consumption, this grenache-based wine's complexity and old vine fruit suggest it could develop beautifully over 2-3 years. The creamy complexity and structured palate indicate sufficient depth to evolve, potentially developing more savoury notes while maintaining its core fruit character. However, given the vibrant 2024 vintage and the wine's current perfect balance of freshness and complexity, it's equally rewarding to enjoy now when the bright strawberry and citrus flavours are at their peak.
