This Marg River rose from the Knee Deep Estate crew is pretty much poetry in motion. It's astonishingly elegant, and bursting with red fruits that flow into a decadent dry finish while boasting a colour that looks like the offspring of salmon and gold. It's best sampled served from a little row boat on a river as the sun sets - but if you can't manage that, the back patio will do nicely.

Why do we love this wine?

Complex, classically crisp and with a hue that manages to look like bottled romance, this 2023 rose is as graceful as they come. The Knee Deep Estate family - who have been serving up vibrant varietal wines for over two decades now - reckon clean fruit picked at optimum ripeness is the secret to this scintillating drop, and we're pretty inclined to agree. Speaking of fruit, it's all but bursting with cherry and raspberry alongside a dash of white pepper that adds a hint of spice to build a balanced palate. In the wine making process a portion of this juice was moved into old barrels for fermentation with the result being a rare complexity that will have you penning love letters (to the delight of your beau) or reciting poetry (to the horror of your friends). Perfectly paired with a fresh salad or a warm sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Knee Deep Estate rosé stands out through its unique winemaking approach where a portion of the juice undergoes barrel fermentation in old oak. This technique, uncommon for rosé production, creates additional complexity and texture while maintaining the wine's fresh character. The result is a more sophisticated expression that bridges the gap between simple summer sippers and serious wine appreciation.

Margaret River's maritime climate and ancient soils contribute significantly to this rosé's mineral backbone and balanced acidity. The region's consistent ocean breezes help retain natural acidity in the grapes, which explains the wine's crisp profile and ability to showcase both fruit intensity and mineral complexity. This terroir expression is what elevates it beyond simple fruit-forward rosés.

The flavour profile reflects the wine's complexity from blending different grape components and winemaking techniques. The cherry and raspberry notes likely come from the primary fruit character and barrel-fermented portion, while the grapefruit and mineral elements emerge from the stainless steel fermented component and Margaret River's terroir. This layered approach creates a more interesting tasting experience than single-note rosés.

For rosé, optimum ripeness means harvesting grapes that have developed sufficient flavour concentration while retaining bright acidity and avoiding excessive sugar levels. This timing is crucial because rosé requires delicate balance - too early and you lose flavour complexity, too late and you risk losing the fresh, crisp character that defines quality rosé. Knee Deep's focus on this timing explains the wine's vibrant fruit expression.

While most rosés are designed for immediate consumption, this wine's barrel fermentation component and Margaret River provenance suggest it has more structure than typical rosés. The 2023 vintage should be enjoyed within 2-3 years to appreciate its fresh fruit character, though the added complexity from barrel work means it won't fall apart quickly. For optimal enjoyment, consume while the vibrant fruit and mineral balance remain prominent.
