Zinfandel, primitivo, whatever you want to call it, you can definitely call it yum! 4.0 Vivino average means we're not the only ones who think so.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Zinfandel has the reputation for being rich, plump, jammy and opulent to the extreme. All good things. But it can also be hotter than a day in the desert and boozier than a wedding. Both things this neatly avoids. If you like your wine full of full-fruited fun, accompanied by a good lick of American oak, but prefer it to not make your tequila look like a soda, this is just the ticket. Velvety cherries and berries, oak tannin and aroma, supple and satisfying.

Frequently Asked Questions

This King Valley Zinfandel offers a more restrained approach compared to the often overpowering California style. While maintaining the grape's signature rich, jammy character with velvety cherries and berries, it avoids the excessive heat and alcohol that can dominate many American Zinfandels. The Australian terroir brings balance, allowing you to enjoy the full-bodied nature without the wine overwhelming your palate or food pairings.

The American oak adds both structural tannins and aromatic complexity to complement Zinfandel's natural fruit intensity. You'll notice cedar notes weaving through the black cherry and plum flavours, creating layers of vanilla and spice that don't mask the fruit but rather frame it elegantly. This oak integration helps create the wine's supple texture while adding the traditional warmth that Zinfandel lovers expect.

This wine's rich fruit character and oak tannins make it perfect for hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think barbecued meats, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's plum and cherry notes can complement rather than compete. The balanced alcohol level means it won't overpower spiced dishes, making it excellent with Mediterranean or Middle Eastern cuisine featuring herbs and robust flavours.

At three years old, this 2021 Zinfandel is hitting its stride and drinking beautifully now, with the fruit and oak elements well-integrated. Zinfandel typically peaks within 5-8 years of vintage, so you have a perfect drinking window ahead. While it could develop further complexity over the next 2-3 years, the supple, satisfying character described suggests it's crafted for current enjoyment rather than extended cellaring.

King Valley's cooler Australian climate compared to traditional Zinfandel regions helps retain the grape's natural acidity while still achieving full ripeness. This climate allows for longer hang time, developing complex flavours without excessive sugar accumulation that leads to high alcohol. The result is a wine that captures Zinfandel's essence - rich, full-fruited character - while maintaining the elegance and drinkability that makes it food-friendly rather than a fruit bomb.
