This is Barossa shiraz with a refined edge. It’s generous and expressive from the first pour, with lifted florals, red berries, cracked black pepper and spice flowing through the aromatics and into the palate - juicy raspberry and forest fruits supported by clove, graphite and a touch of violet. Z Wines are making outstanding shiraz for fun these days...

Why do we love this wine?

Five generations of one family have tended this vineyard in Lyndoch in the Barossa. That’s pretty damn impressive. We’re talking near on 170 years. This meticulously cared-for wine sees two years in a mix of French and American oak, providing a cedary touch and tannins to with the sheer intensity of the fruit. The mulberry and plum is supported by liquorice, chocolate, violet and pepper, making for a complex and rich Barossa shiraz that could happily handle a few years in the cellar if you were so inclined.

" The Section 3146 title here honours the original southern Barossa property of the Zerk family, settled five generations ago and still under familial custodianship. Shiraz is undoubtedly the hero regional variety that can tell that story, speaking with a hearty mix of sweet plum and raspberry, crumbly soil and crushed kitchen herbs, bay leaf and ground pepper. Earth, fruit and spice - all the rustic regional pleasure in one glass, fleshy, chewy, sticky with a lip-smack of fresh, crimson berries in the finish. A wine that speaks truly of its home." - Tony Love

Frequently Asked Questions

Five generations of the same family have meticulously tended this Lyndoch vineyard since the 1850s, creating an extraordinary legacy of viticultural knowledge passed down through generations. This continuity allows for intimate understanding of the terroir and optimal farming practices that can't be replicated elsewhere. The 'Old Vine' rating reflects vines that have developed deep root systems over decades, producing fruit with exceptional concentration and complexity that younger plantings simply cannot match.

The two-year maturation in a combination of French and American oak creates a sophisticated flavour profile that balances fruit intensity with structural complexity. French oak contributes elegant tannins and subtle spice notes, while American oak adds the distinctive cedary character and vanilla undertones you'll taste. This extended oak ageing also helps integrate the wine's components, softening the natural power of Barossa Shiraz while adding layers of complexity that will continue to evolve.

The wine's rich mulberry and plum fruit, supported by liquorice and chocolate notes, makes it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steaks, or hearty game meats where the wine's full body and structured tannins can complement rather than overpower. The pepper and spice elements also work beautifully with barbecued meats or dishes featuring bold herbs and spices.

While this 2023 Shiraz is absolutely delicious now, showing beautiful fruit expression and well-integrated oak, it has the structure and complexity to reward cellaring for several years. The 'Killer Vintage' rating suggests exceptional growing conditions that produced wines with both immediate appeal and long-term potential. If you cellar it, expect the primary fruit flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characters while the tannins continue to soften and integrate.

Section 3146 likely refers to the specific cadastral section or vineyard block where these grapes were grown, indicating this is a single-vineyard wine from a precisely defined area within the broader Lyndoch region. This level of specificity demonstrates the producer's commitment to showcasing the unique characteristics of this particular site, rather than blending fruit from multiple locations. Single-vineyard wines like this offer a pure expression of terroir, allowing you to taste the distinct personality of this historic Barossa plot.
