Why do we love this wine?

This thing smells so good, you'll just wanna sit there sniffing it all day. It throws up black cherry, blood plum and raspberry with a crack of pepper and a hint of clove and star anise, yeah, classic cool-climate gear. It’s fragrant, lifted and super inviting. Medium-to-full-bodied and silky, this is all about finesse. Juicy dark berries glide across the palate, fine tannins keep it in line, and a subtle lick of oak fills it out in the background. Fresh, peppery and neatly structured on the finish. Modern Yarra shiraz done right - flavour-packed, polished and dangerously easy to fall in love with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cool-climate Shiraz like this Yering Station develops more elegant, pepper-driven characteristics compared to the bold, jammy styles from warmer regions. The Yarra Valley's moderate temperatures allow the grapes to retain natural acidity while developing complex spice notes like white pepper, clove and star anise. This results in a more refined, food-friendly wine with silky tannins rather than the powerful, fruit-forward styles typical of regions like Barossa Valley.

Serve this Shiraz at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase its fragrant aromatics and silky texture. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the complex berry and spice characters, though it's approachable straight from the bottle. The wine's medium-to-full body and fine tannin structure make it perfect alongside grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or aged cheeses where its peppery finish can complement rich, savoury flavours.

James Halliday's Special Value Award recognises wines that deliver exceptional quality relative to their price point, making them standout purchases in their category. This 90-point rating from Australia's most respected wine critic indicates the 2021 Village Shiraz punches well above its weight class. Combined with Yering Station's status as a Halliday Top 100 Producer, it suggests you're getting premium Yarra Valley quality at an accessible price.

While this Shiraz is beautifully approachable now with its fresh, juicy character, it has the structure to develop over 5-8 years. The fine tannins and balanced acidity provide a solid framework for aging, during which the bright fruit flavours will integrate further with the subtle oak and spice elements. However, given its polished, modern style, there's no need to wait - it's designed to be enjoyed at any stage of its drinking window.

The peppery, clove and star anise characteristics come from both the Shiraz grape's natural tendency to develop spice compounds and the Yarra Valley's cool growing conditions. Cooler temperatures during ripening preserve these volatile aromatic compounds that would otherwise be lost in hotter climates. Additionally, the grape's thick skins contribute pyrazines and other phenolic compounds that create those distinctive white pepper and exotic spice notes that make cool-climate Australian Shiraz so distinctive and food-friendly.
