If Yering Station isn't the most well-known winery in the Yarra, then it's seriously close. This is a wine that typifies, proudly, the house style that defines Yering Station, and, we'd argue, defines the entire Yarra Valley region itself.

Why do we love this wine?

It's easy to see why every Yarra producer is trying to make wines just like this one. A juicy core of red and dark cherries forms the heart of this wine, lifted by a moreish cherry pip bitterness that keeps things fresh and lively. Wrapped around that is fine layers of silky tannins and zippy acidity, giving the whole thing structure without weight. The finish is outstanding. Long, textural, and packed with fruit-driven complexity. Elegant, expressive, and seriously drinkable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2023 vintage has been rated as a 'Killer Vintage', indicating exceptional growing conditions in the Yarra Valley. Cool climate regions like Yarra Valley benefit from balanced seasons that allow Pinot Noir to develop its characteristic elegance while maintaining bright acidity. This vintage showcases the perfect marriage of fruit concentration and structural finesse that makes Yarra Valley Pinot Noir so sought after by producers across the region.

Yering Station's 5-star Halliday rating reflects their mastery of Pinot Noir's delicate nature, particularly in creating wines with 'fine layers of silky tannins'. This textural quality comes from careful extraction techniques and likely whole-bunch fermentation, which preserves the grape's natural elegance. The result is a medium-bodied wine that delivers complexity without heaviness, allowing the cherry pip bitterness and zippy acidity to shine through.

The presence of both red and dark cherry flavours indicates excellent phenolic ripeness achieved in 2023. Red cherries typically represent the bright, primary fruit character of younger Pinot Noir, while dark cherries suggest deeper extraction and concentration. This dual character, combined with cranberry and raspberry notes, creates the 'fruit-driven complexity' that makes this wine both immediately appealing and cellar-worthy.

The wine's silky tannins and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that complement its cherry and rose petal aromatics. Think duck breast with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's structural balance won't be overwhelmed. The 'moreish cherry pip bitterness' also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, as it cuts through rich, fatty textures while enhancing the wine's fruit expression.

While this Pinot Noir is described as 'seriously drinkable' now, its 'outstanding' finish and structural integrity suggest 5-8 years of cellaring potential. Yarra Valley Pinot Noir typically develops beautiful secondary characters of earth, spice, and forest floor with age, while the wine's zippy acidity will help preserve its freshness. The combination of fruit concentration and fine tannin structure indicates this wine will reward both immediate consumption and patient cellaring.
