The previous vintage of this cabernet won Xanadu the Jimmy Watson - arguably Australia’s most sought-after wine trophy - and we reckon the 2022 is even better.

Why do we love this wine?

One of the most talked-about cabernets in the country. A pure expression of Margaret River: blackcurrant, plum and cassis meet bay leaf, cedar and graphite, with polished tannins and serious length. Classy gear. From the outstanding 2022 vintage, it’s 100% cabernet sauvignon and pure Margaret River pedigree. Think inky black fruit, graphite, cassis and bay leaf, framed by fine-grained tannins and a long, impactful finish. It’s structured, layered and powerful, but never heavy, never sluggish, just beautifully composed from start to finish. Aged in French oak, with all the finesse and restraint you’d expect from one of WA’s top producers. This is Xanadu in full flight. One for the cellar, or a decanter and a proper meal. Either way, you’re in for something special.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage in Margaret River delivered exceptional conditions that allowed cabernet sauvignon to reach full phenolic ripeness while maintaining natural acidity. This balance is crucial for premium cabernet, as it ensures the wine develops complex flavours like blackcurrant and cassis while preserving the structural integrity needed for long-term cellaring. The vintage's success is reflected in this wine's multiple gold medals and 96-point rating from Ray Jordan.

French oak adds subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit, contributing cedar and spice notes that complement the wine's natural blackcurrant and graphite characteristics. Unlike American oak which can be more vanilla-forward, French oak provides fine-grained tannins and allows the terroir-driven minerality to shine through. This restrained approach is typical of premium Margaret River producers who prioritise elegance over power.

Margaret River's maritime climate provides the perfect balance of warm days and cool nights, allowing cabernet sauvignon to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. The region's gravelly soils promote excellent drainage, stressing the vines just enough to concentrate flavours while the ocean influence prevents excessive heat stress. This combination produces cabernets with both power and finesse, explaining why this wine exhibits such distinctive graphite minerality alongside rich fruit.

Decanting for 1-2 hours will help this full-bodied cabernet open up, allowing the fine-grained tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to emerge fully. Given its structured profile and premium pedigree, this wine has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years, during which the graphite and cedar notes will integrate further with the fruit. The wine's multiple gold medals and high critic scores indicate it has the balance needed for graceful ageing.

The wine's full-bodied structure and fine-grained tannins make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes like aged beef, lamb with herbs, or game meats. The cedar and spice notes complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom-based sauces or herb crusts, while the wine's natural acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods. Its graphite minerality also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, creating a sophisticated tasting experience.
