Coonawarra is cabernet country. Everyone knows that. Right? Or at least we think we do... But when Wynns turns their attention to shiraz - specifically, the perfectly-ripening fruit from the ancient vines along V&A Lane - something genuinely exciting happens. And Coonawarra cabernets start shaking in their boots...

Why do we love this wine?

This is not your typical full-throttle Australian shiraz. That's entirely the point. Early harvested, whole bunch included, wild fermented and matured in larger oak - every decision made to preserve freshness, brightness and a lifted, food-friendly elegance that puts this wine in a completely different conversation. The nose is immediately captivating - roasted strawberry, magnolia blossom, fresh pastry and a cool-climate floral quality that feels effortlessly refined. The palate is bright and seamlessly structured, with cherry, blueberry and savoury spice elements rolling through very fine tannins and a long, peppery, biscuity finish that just keeps evolving in the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine deliberately breaks the mould of powerful, jammy Australian Shiraz through careful winemaking techniques. Early harvesting preserves natural acidity, whole bunch inclusion adds structural complexity, and wild fermentation creates unique flavour compounds. The use of larger oak vessels allows the fruit to shine while adding subtle texture rather than overwhelming vanilla notes, resulting in a wine that prioritises elegance and food compatibility over sheer power.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone provides excellent drainage while retaining moisture, creating ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. The region's cool climate allows Shiraz to develop complex aromatics and maintain natural acidity, which is essential for the bright, lifted style Wynns has crafted here. This terroir naturally produces the refined, food-friendly characteristics that define this wine, making it a perfect match for their winemaking philosophy.

The wine's bright acidity and fine tannin structure make it exceptionally versatile with food, particularly dishes that benefit from wine's ability to cut through richness. Think roasted lamb with herbs, duck breast with cherry sauce, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's savoury spice elements can complement complex flavours. The peppery finish and floral notes also pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine featuring rosemary, thyme, and black pepper.

Scores of 96 points from The Real Review and 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion place this wine in the top tier of Australian Shiraz, representing exceptional quality and craftsmanship. These ratings recognise not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its structural integrity and ageing potential. Wynns' 5 Red Star Halliday rating confirms their consistent excellence as a producer, indicating this wine comes from a winery with a proven track record of creating outstanding wines.

The wine's complex aromatics and fine tannin structure suggest it will continue developing beautifully both in the glass and over years in the cellar. Initially showing bright fruit and floral notes, extended aeration reveals deeper savoury elements and spice complexity. With proper cellaring, expect the wine to develop tertiary characters like leather, earth, and dried herbs while maintaining its core elegance, likely drinking beautifully for 10-15 years from vintage.
