This isn't just any cabernet. This is the John Riddoch. Australia's most revered flagship wine, made only in exceptional years from less than 1% of Wynns' finest terra rossa fruit. Since 1982, this wine has defined what premium Australian cabernet should be. And the 2019 might just be the best vintage yet - 97/98pts across the board.

Why do we love this wine?

So what makes 2019 so special? Perfect vintage conditions created a "brightly lit" John Riddoch that flows with elegant restraint. The lifted nose has a gorgeous violet perfume, bright red and dark cherries, with brooding undertones of chestnut and bitter dark chocolate. The palate delivers vivid red and black forest berries in a classical full-bodied frame, extending with great persistence to a long finish marked by sandalwood and finely detailed tannins. The critics are unanimous: 98pts Halliday. 98pts Winsor Dobbin. 97pts Robert Parker, Wine Advocate. 97pts Andrew Caillard MW. Campbell Mattinson calls it "stellar" and "everything you could hope for in a cabernet." Erin Larkin declares it "truly sublime." - you get the idea. This is the real deal. Ready to drink now but built to age gracefully until 2040 or so. Whether you're opening it for life's biggest celebrations or laying it down for future generations, this is Australian wine history in a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2019 vintage benefited from perfect growing conditions that created what critics describe as a 'brightly lit' expression of this iconic wine. This translates to exceptional clarity of fruit flavours and elegant restraint - qualities that distinguish great vintages from merely good ones. The seamless balance between power and finesse has earned unanimous critical acclaim, with multiple 97-98 point scores from Australia's most respected wine critics.

While this John Riddoch is drinking beautifully now, it's built for the long haul with graceful ageing potential until around 2040. Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from premium sites like John Riddoch typically hits its stride after 8-12 years, when the tannins fully integrate and secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth emerge. The wine's classical full-bodied structure and fine tannin quality suggest it will reward patient cellaring with increased complexity.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil - a thin layer of red clay over limestone - provides ideal drainage and mineral complexity that Cabernet Sauvignon craves. The region's cool climate allows for extended ripening periods, developing intense flavours while maintaining natural acidity and elegant tannin structure. This unique terroir combination produces Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctive eucalyptus lift and exceptional ageing potential that rivals Bordeaux's finest estates.

The wine's rich blackberry and chocolate notes, combined with its full-bodied structure and fine tannins, make it perfect for premium red meats like aged beef or lamb. The sandalwood finish and violet perfume also complement game meats beautifully, while the wine's classical frame can handle rich, herb-crusted preparations. Hard aged cheeses like vintage cheddar or aged gouda will echo the wine's complexity without overwhelming its elegant restraint.

Absolutely - having multiple bottles allows you to experience this exceptional vintage's evolution over time, which is particularly valuable given its 20+ year ageing potential. You can open one now to appreciate its youthful vibrancy, cellar one for medium-term drinking in 5-8 years, and save the third for long-term cellaring when secondary and tertiary flavours fully develop. With such unanimous critical acclaim and Wynns' track record, this represents both drinking pleasure and potential investment value.
