Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Cabernet (86%) takes the lead here, driving the wine’s line, length and structure, while shiraz (14%) adds plushness, depth and that unmistakable Barossa swagger. The nose centres around lifted blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry, with hints of liquorice, black olive, bay leaf and subtle florals. On the palate, it’s sleek, rich and complex - layers of ripe black fruit, churned earth, spice and cedary French oak propped up by silky, long-limbed tannins. The critics are in rare agreement. Halliday describes it as “seamless… cracking stuff.” Tony Love talks of “elite line and length” with “milk choc, plum and blackberry flavours to finish.” This is a wine built for big occasions - and for decades in the cellar. Only 28 barrels made. This is as rare as it is remarkable.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is actually a reverse blend where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates at 86%, with Shiraz playing a supporting role at 14%. This unusual composition allows the Cabernet to provide the wine's structural backbone and elegant line, while the Shiraz contributes the signature Barossa richness and depth. The result is a wine that combines Cabernet's refined tannin structure with Shiraz's generous fruit character, creating something more complex than either variety could achieve alone.

With its full-bodied structure, silky tannins, and exceptional critic scores averaging 95-97 points, this wine is built for long-term cellaring. The description specifically mentions it's designed for 'decades in the cellar', suggesting a drinking window that could extend 15-20 years or more. The French oak integration and concentrated fruit will continue to evolve, developing tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and cedar while the tannins soften further.

Only 28 barrels were produced, making this an extremely rare release even by premium wine standards. This tiny production reflects Wolf Blass's commitment to selecting only the finest parcels from their Barossa vineyards for 'The Master' series. Such limited quantities allow for meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard selection and winemaking, resulting in the exceptional quality that earned near-perfect scores from multiple critics.

The wine's full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile of blackcurrant, spice, and cedary oak make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The earthy undertones and structured tannins also complement mature hard cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or black olives, echoing the wine's own savoury complexity.

Receiving 97 points from Wine Pilot and 95 points from both Tony Love and Huon Hooke represents exceptional critical consensus - scores this high indicate a wine of outstanding quality that stands among Australia's finest. James Halliday's description as 'seamless... cracking stuff' and Tony Love's praise for its 'elite line and length' suggest this wine achieves the rare combination of power and elegance that defines truly great Australian reds.
