Wild Earth have done it again. With a formidable reputation to uphold and an extremely strong vintage, the pressure was on. Boy, did they deliver. Intensity in spades, a complex and concentrated fruit profile and silky, enduring tannins. A wine with the rare capacity to drink beautifully from now until 2035 (or longer).

Why do we love this wine?

Wild Earth are a solid mofo favourite and absolute favourites of the wine press too. A considered blend of fruit from highly regarded vineyards in Central Otago, selected to highlight the strengths of the ripping '21/'22 growing season; this wine has everything: elegance, grace, poise, power. There is a seductive bouquet of black fruits on the nose, with a touch of the tertiary mushroom complexity. Expect dark cherry, plum and thyme on the plate, this has it all in check, composed and confident. Whether you’re looking to impress at a dinner party next week or hide a few bottles away for 15+ years - this is the pinot for the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021/2022 growing season in Central Otago was exceptional due to ideal weather conditions that allowed for extended hang time and optimal ripening. This vintage produced wines with remarkable balance between power and elegance, which is why Wild Earth specifically selected fruit from this season. The combination of warm days and cool nights typical of Central Otago was particularly pronounced, resulting in wines with intense flavour concentration while maintaining the region's signature finesse.

This Wild Earth Pinot Noir has excellent cellaring potential of 15+ years thanks to its structured tannins and balanced acidity. The wine already shows tertiary mushroom complexity on the nose, indicating it's built for long-term ageing. As it matures, expect the primary fruit flavours to evolve into more savoury, earthy notes while the wine develops greater textural complexity and integration.

The tertiary mushroom complexity in this young Pinot Noir is a hallmark of premium Central Otago fruit and skilled winemaking. These earthy, forest floor notes develop when grapes achieve optimal ripeness and undergo careful fermentation processes. Rather than indicating age, these characteristics suggest the wine was made from exceptional fruit that naturally expresses the terroir's mineral-rich soils and cool climate conditions.

The wine's combination of dark cherry and plum fruit with thyme herbaceousness makes it incredibly food-friendly. Classic pairings include duck breast, lamb with herbs, or mushroom risotto that echo the wine's earthy complexity. The light-bodied structure won't overpower delicate dishes like salmon or roasted chicken, while the wine's elegance and poise make it perfect for special occasion dining.

Wild Earth's success stems from their meticulous vineyard selection across Central Otago's most respected sites, allowing them to blend the best characteristics of different terroirs. Their winemaking philosophy focuses on expressing the vintage and region rather than imposing a house style. The 95-point Wine Orbit rating and multiple five-star reviews reflect their ability to consistently produce wines that balance immediate appeal with serious ageing potential.
