Why do we love this wine?

Urailda is a small, boutique producer focused on producing wines that express the pure quality of the hand-selected fruit they use. This syrah, all from one Balhannah vineyard, is no exception. A ripe, juicy nose of dark fruits (think mulberries and plums) with elegant floral notes envelop the senses. The palate that follows is silky, ripe and juicy, with a perfect amount of vanilla oak spices and tannin to balance it all out. This is so easy-drinking, you'll be through the bottle before you've noticed the first glass is gone!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Adelaide Hills' cool climate creates a more elegant, medium-bodied style compared to the powerful, full-bodied Shiraz from warmer regions like Barossa Valley. This cooler environment allows the fruit to retain natural acidity and develop complex floral aromatics alongside the classic dark fruit flavours. The result is a more European-influenced expression that showcases finesse over power, making it incredibly food-friendly and approachable.

Australian winemakers often use 'Syrah' to indicate a cooler climate, more elegant style inspired by France's Northern Rhône Valley, while 'Shiraz' typically denotes the warmer climate, fuller-bodied Australian expression. Uraidla's choice of 'Syrah' signals their intention to craft a refined, medium-bodied wine that emphasises elegance and terroir expression. This stylistic distinction helps wine lovers understand what to expect in the glass before they even open the bottle.

The silky texture and balanced tannins make this Syrah incredibly versatile with food, particularly excellent with grilled lamb, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes that complement the earthy undertones. The vanilla oak spices and plum flavours also pair beautifully with barbecued meats or aged cheeses. Unlike heavier Shiraz styles that can overpower delicate dishes, this medium-bodied expression works wonderfully with roasted vegetables or even salmon.

Sourcing all fruit from one Balhannah vineyard allows Uraidla to capture a pure expression of that specific terroir, creating consistency and character that blended wines often lack. Single vineyard wines typically show more distinct personality and sense of place, as the winemaker can work with fruit that ripened under identical conditions. This focused approach often results in more harmonious flavours and a clearer expression of both the variety and the vintage conditions.

This 2021 Syrah is designed for immediate enjoyment, with its ripe, juicy character and silky texture making it perfect for current drinking. The balanced tannin structure and medium body suggest it will drink beautifully over the next 3-5 years, developing more complex secondary flavours while maintaining its fresh fruit appeal. While it could age gracefully, the wine's approachable style and elegant fruit expression are at their peak now.
