This masterpiece was created for lovers of big, rich, imposing Barossa shiraz. A throwback, or perhaps a nod, to the old-school Barossa styles that made the region (and probably the whole country) famous. It's hard not to get a bit caught up in this wine, beautifully done. It's no surprise to us this is pulling huge scores left and right...

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

22 months in 20% new oak is the first thing you need to know about this beautiful beast. A rich, concentrated and complex whirl of dark chocolate, black fruits and cedar. The tannins are plush and juicy but silky on the finish. As we said above, this is truly a wine for those that yearn for the Barossa shiraz of old. Drink it with a knife and fork, pour it on your steak - all those clichés. It's unreal. We tried cellaring this one at home but quickly learnt something strange... this wine's like's a mozzie bite, the more you tell yourself not to touch it, not to think about it, the harder it gets because it's just heaven to scratch that itch. There's no way we'll be able to keep our hands off this for the next 10 - 15 years, but anyone that could would be in for a very special surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Craneford represents a return to the traditional Barossa Shiraz style of yesteryear, before the region became known for overly extracted, high-alcohol wines. The 22 months in only 20% new oak allows the fruit to shine while adding subtle complexity, creating a wine that's rich and concentrated yet maintains elegance. It's what Barossa Shiraz used to be - powerful but balanced, with silky tannins rather than aggressive extraction.

While this wine has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years, it's dangerously drinkable right now. The description aptly compares it to a mosquito bite - the more you try to resist opening it, the more tempting it becomes. The wine's structure suggests it will develop beautiful tertiary flavours over time, but its immediate appeal makes it nearly impossible to leave untouched in the cellar.

This is quintessentially a 'knife and fork' wine that demands substantial food pairings. The rich dark chocolate and black fruit flavours, combined with plush tannins, make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled steaks, braised lamb shanks, or slow-cooked beef. The wine's concentration and silky finish can handle bold flavours and rich sauces, while the cedar notes from oak aging complement char-grilled meats beautifully.

The consistent high ratings (95-96 points across multiple critics) reflect this wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse. Critics recognise the skillful winemaking that achieves concentration without heaviness, and the way 20% new oak integration enhances rather than dominates the fruit character. The wine successfully captures the essence of premium Marananga fruit while showcasing the traditional Barossa style that made the region famous.

Marananga is one of Barossa's most prestigious sub-regions, sitting in the warmer northern section of the valley with ancient soils that produce intensely flavoured Shiraz. The area's red clay over limestone creates wines with exceptional depth and structure, which explains this wine's rich concentration and complex dark fruit profile. Marananga Shiraz is renowned for its ability to age gracefully while maintaining vibrant fruit character, making this a textbook example of the sub-region's potential.
