Why do we love this wine?

This powerful shiraz has been sourced from the very best west-facing hillside Marananga block, smack-bang in the the middle of Australia's favourite wine region, the Barossa. Aged in a combination of both French and American oak for at least 18 months, this wine is crafted to go the distance and is best enjoyed in life's finer moments. A potential 15 year nap in the cellar is far from off the cards here, a genuine collectors item. This is a very big wine. A dense, sweet-fruited core, firm-but-friendly tannins and glorious natural acid run the show whilst the American and French oak hum along in the background bringing added weight. Big time Barossa. Not one to miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

The combination of dense fruit concentration from the west-facing Marananga hillside vineyard, firm tannin structure, and 18+ months of French and American oak ageing creates the backbone needed for extended cellaring. The natural acidity acts as a preservative, while the full-bodied palate weight suggests the wine has enough intensity to evolve gracefully over time, developing secondary flavours like leather, earth, and dried fruits as the primary fruit integrates with the oak.

The combination of French and American oak creates a complex layering effect - French oak typically contributes subtle spice, vanilla, and structural tannins, while American oak adds sweeter vanilla, coconut, and more pronounced wood flavours. This dual approach allows the wine's dense fruit core of blueberry and chocolate to shine while the oak provides supporting weight and complexity rather than dominating the palate.

West-facing slopes in the Barossa receive intense afternoon sun, which concentrates flavours and develops the thick skins that give Shiraz its colour and tannin structure. The hillside elevation provides better drainage and cooler nights, creating the diurnal temperature variation that preserves natural acidity - crucial for balance in such a powerful, full-bodied wine. This terroir combination is what allows Marananga to produce some of Australia's most age-worthy Shiraz.

The wine's full-bodied nature and firm tannins make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity - think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, or game meats like venison. The chocolate and spice notes complement dishes with earthy flavours like mushroom risotto or aged cheeses, while the natural acidity cuts through fatty foods, making it excellent with charcuterie or duck confit.

These exceptional scores from respected Australian wine critics indicate this Shiraz represents outstanding quality within its category, particularly impressive for a 2022 vintage that's still developing. Such high ratings suggest the wine demonstrates textbook Barossa characteristics - concentrated fruit, balanced oak integration, and structured tannins - while showing the potential for long-term cellaring that separates premium wines from everyday drinking bottles.
