Blue and black fruits, cleverly interwoven French oak and persistent natural tannins, this is what Barossa shiraz is all about. Skilfully balanced, complex and concentrated, we're in love with what this winemaker (consistently) produces.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The winemaker's mantra of "hand-made, slow and gentle" seemingly belies the power and grunt of the wines he creates, year-in year-out. Our shiraz at hand has been harvested from the family-owned and operated vineyards of Marananga. These vineyards sit entirely within the famed western sub-region of the Barossa , and are known Australia-wide for superb Shiraz production and deep, rich soils interspersed with the occasional limestone slab. This is the first vintage made in the brand-spanking new, state of the art, winery and we agree with Peter Nixon, of the Wine Libertine, that this might just be "the finest [Black Market] Shiraz release to date".

Frequently Asked Questions

This Shiraz comes from Marananga's family-owned vineyards in the western Barossa, renowned for producing Australia's most powerful Shiraz expressions. The deep, rich soils interspersed with limestone slabs create unique terroir conditions that contribute to the wine's exceptional concentration and complexity. The 2022 vintage marks the first release from Ben Murray's new state-of-the-art winery, representing a significant evolution in their winemaking capabilities.

The blackberry notes reflect the intense fruit concentration achieved through careful vineyard management in Marananga's warm climate, while the dark chocolate and mocha characteristics emerge from the wine's full-bodied structure and likely oak integration. These flavour profiles are classic hallmarks of premium Barossa Shiraz, where the region's hot days and cool nights allow for optimal phenolic development. The combination creates a wine that balances primary fruit intensity with sophisticated secondary complexity.

The dual 96-point scores from Decanter and Peter Dixon reflect exceptional winemaking quality, with Peter Nixon calling it potentially "the finest Black Market Shiraz release to date". These scores place it among Australia's elite Shiraz wines, recognising both the outstanding 2022 vintage conditions and Ben Murray's "hand-made, slow and gentle" approach. Such high ratings typically indicate perfect balance between power, elegance, and aging potential.

This philosophy emphasises minimal intervention techniques that preserve the natural character of the Marananga fruit while allowing gradual extraction of colour, tannins, and flavour compounds. Despite creating powerful, full-bodied wines, this approach ensures the wine maintains elegance and avoids over-extraction that can lead to harsh or unbalanced results. The new winery facilities likely provide even greater control over fermentation temperatures and timing, enhancing this gentle approach.

Premium Barossa Shiraz from exceptional vintages like 2022 typically develops beautifully over 10-15 years, with the full-bodied structure and high-quality fruit providing excellent aging potential. The wine's current power and concentration suggest it will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring to integrate fully, though it's certainly enjoyable now. The limestone influence in Marananga soils often contributes to wines with particularly good longevity and graceful aging characteristics.
