This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation: Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we men as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fruit comes from century-old bush vines planted in 1910, representing some of McLaren Vale's most treasured viticultural heritage. These gnarly old vines have developed extensive root systems over 110+ years, allowing them to access deep water sources and mineral deposits that younger plantings simply can't reach. The east-west row orientation protects the grapes from harsh afternoon sun, while the deep clay soils provide excellent water retention and contribute to the wine's remarkable concentration and complexity.

While approachable now for those who can't resist, this reserve-level Shiraz is built for extended cellaring thanks to its old-vine concentration and full-bodied structure. McLaren Vale Shiraz from quality producers typically peaks between 8-15 years, meaning this 2018 should drink beautifully through the late 2020s and well into the 2030s. The wine's 96-point rating and museum release status suggest it has the backbone and complexity to reward patient collectors with even greater integration and tertiary development over time.

The rich, full-bodied profile with notes of blood plum, black olive, and vanilla makes this ideal for robust red meat dishes and Mediterranean flavours. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, grilled ribeye with herb butter, or even game meats like venison. The black olive character particularly complements dishes with tapenade, roasted vegetables, or aged hard cheeses. The wine's concentration can also stand up to barbecued meats with bold spice rubs or rich, tomato-based pasta sauces.

Fox Creek has earned iconic status through consistent quality and their ability to showcase McLaren Vale's unique terroir, particularly through their work with old-vine fruit. Their reserve wines have garnered critical acclaim and helped establish McLaren Vale's reputation for world-class Shiraz on the international stage. The fact that this wine carries both 'Iconic Producer' and 'Museum Release' designations reflects Fox Creek's standing among Australia's most respected wineries, with a track record of producing age-worthy wines that represent exceptional value at the reserve level.

A 96-point score from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in truly exceptional territory, indicating outstanding quality across all aspects - aroma, flavour, structure, and finish. Scores above 95 points are reserved for wines that demonstrate remarkable complexity, perfect balance, and distinctive character that sets them apart from their peers. Combined with the 4.2 Vivino rating across all vintages, this suggests Fox Creek consistently delivers at this premium level, making this 2018 vintage a standout example of what McLaren Vale Shiraz can achieve at its finest.
