Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

First and foremost: fruit. It's the hallmark of any well-aged wine, how well the fruit presents itself aromatically. Here it sings - fully and completely. A beautiful berry mix with raspberries and plum leading the way - classic McLaren Vale in every way. Lifted and punchy acidity gives the wine youthful zeal and allows both the fruit and tertiary development to really shine. There's a little bit of a savoury green, grassy note that provides an all important freshness to the fruit profile. Powerful to be sure - it has a rich, dense core. Some medicinal eucalypt chimes in late in the piece, rounding out the sweet aromatics with some sophistication. This is a really special wine and a study in what aged wine can and should look like. If ever we needed to convert someone to the nuance, intricacy, and sheer other-worldly enjoyment of aged reds, this is what we would reach for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Premium McLaren Vale Shiraz like this Liandra has the structural backbone to age gracefully for decades. The wine's natural acidity and tannin structure, combined with Clarendon Hills' meticulous winemaking, has allowed the fruit to evolve rather than fade. What you're experiencing now is the magical transformation where primary fruit flavours have developed into complex tertiary notes while maintaining that essential berry core that defines great aged wine.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create Shiraz with a distinctive personality - rich and powerful yet elegant. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that preserve acidity, while the diverse soil types add complexity. This Liandra perfectly demonstrates the region's ability to produce full-bodied wines that balance power with finesse, showcasing those classic raspberry and plum flavours that McLaren Vale is renowned for.

Absolutely - this 16-year-old Shiraz will benefit enormously from decanting. Allow it to breathe for at least an hour to let those complex aromatics fully express themselves and any sediment to settle. The medicinal eucalypt and savoury notes mentioned in the tasting profile will become more pronounced with air exposure, while the fruit will open up to reveal its full spectrum of berry flavours.

The wine's full-bodied nature and earthy, leather notes make it perfect for rich, slow-cooked dishes like braised lamb shanks or beef bourguignon. The lifted acidity and berry fruit also complement game meats beautifully, while the savoury complexity pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses. Avoid delicate dishes - this wine demands food with enough substance to match its powerful character.

Clarendon Hills is renowned for their minimal intervention approach and exceptional vineyard selection, which is evident in this wine's pristine fruit expression even after 16 years. Their Five Red Star Halliday rating reflects consistent quality across their range, and this Liandra demonstrates their ability to craft wines that age with grace. The wine's perfect balance between power and elegance showcases their understanding of McLaren Vale terroir and commitment to expressing site-specific character.
