Why do we love this wine?

First and foremost: fruit. It's the hallmark of any well-aged wine, how well the fruit presents itself aromatically. Here it sings - fully and completely. A beautiful berry mix with raspberries and plum leading the way - classic McLaren Vale in every way. Lifted and punchy acidity gives the wine youthful zeal and allows both the fruit and tertiary development to really shine. There's a little bit of a savoury green, grassy note that provides an all important freshness to the fruit profile. Powerful to be sure – it has a rich, dense core. Some medicinal eucalypt chimes in late in the piece, rounding out the sweet aromatics with some sophistication. This is a really special wine and a study in what aged wine can and should look like. If ever we needed to convert someone to the nuance, intricacy, and sheer other-worldly enjoyment of aged reds, this is what we would reach for.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine demonstrates the beautiful evolution that premium McLaren Vale Shiraz undergoes with proper cellaring. The fruit has developed complex tertiary characteristics while maintaining its core berry intensity, showing sophisticated medicinal eucalyptus notes and savoury green elements that only emerge with time. The lifted acidity has preserved the wine's youthful energy, creating a perfect balance between mature complexity and vibrant freshness that exemplifies why Australian Shiraz ages so gracefully.

McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for its rich, dense fruit profile combined with distinctive regional characteristics like the medicinal eucalyptus notes found in this Liandra bottling. The region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create wines with powerful berry flavors while maintaining natural acidity, unlike the more structured Barossa styles or the cooler climate expressions from Adelaide Hills. This particular wine showcases the region's ability to produce Shiraz with both immediate appeal and exceptional aging potential.

Clarendon Hills has earned recognition as a Top 100 Winery and consistently high ratings from critics like Robert Parker because of their uncompromising approach to single-vineyard expressions. Their wines demonstrate remarkable consistency across vintages while showcasing the unique terroir of each site, as evidenced by this Liandra's perfect integration of power and finesse. The winery's commitment to minimal intervention winemaking allows the natural characteristics of McLaren Vale fruit to shine through, creating wines that age beautifully and develop incredible complexity over time.

The wine's rich, dense core and savoury complexity make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity without overwhelming its nuanced tertiary development. Think slow-braised lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's earthy and spice elements can complement the protein's richness. The medicinal eucalyptus notes and lifted acidity also make it surprisingly versatile with Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and olive oil, while the mature fruit character pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses.

This 2004 Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, having reached that sweet spot where primary fruit, secondary development, and tertiary complexity are in perfect harmony. The description emphasizes how well the fruit presents itself aromatically while showing sophisticated aged characteristics, indicating it's at peak drinking condition. However, given the wine's excellent structure and the producer's track record, it could continue to develop gracefully for another 5-8 years, though the current balance of power and elegance makes it irresistible to enjoy today.
